Tools and Hardware Reviews of La Crosse Technology EA-3010U Handheld AnemometerCustomer Review: An inexpensive way to measure wind speed. Summary: 4 Stars
I fly radio control helicopters with my friends at a local club. It is usually windy during the winter months here in NW Houston, and "perceived" wind speed provide some of us with grounds for deciding not to fly.
So for fun, I decided to buy and inexpensive anemometer to properly gauge average wind speed and peak gust speed.
Other reviewers reported issues with the battery being dead or the unit was DOA. When received, I found the battery already installed without protection. I consider this a no-no, since the battery could conceivable be drained while while sitting for months somewhere in a warehouse. And when I attempted to turn the unit on...nothing happened.
But I didn't give up. I pulled the battery out, wiped it down with a tissue, and reinstalled it. That did the trick and the unit started right up. It now sits in a plastic ziplock bag in my toolbox that always accompanies me to the field. We've all enjoyed knowing what wind speeds we can tolerate (15mph) before getting skittish about flying. It's also great for reporting in our monthly newsletters when appropriate for the story. One of our members was pretty excited about this product because all he could find up to now were units costing on the order of $80++.
It won't surprise me to see him show up with a copy of his own. I warned him about the battery, but both of us agree we know where to find inexpensive replacements locally so no worries.
I did notice that the wind chill effect is slooow to report, but I really don't care about that because it wasn't needed and it's not used. If it feels chilly out to me, I put on a jacket or I go home.
At first I was a bit concerned that no bag was included, but now I'm glad it didn't. That would have added to cost (and therefore price), and the bag would likely have made it more bulky than desired for easy storage in my toolbox.
In summary, a good product with a good price that works fine for non-professional application.
Description of La Crosse Technology EA-3010U Handheld AnemometerMonitor the current wind speed with this handheld anemometer. For sailors, surfers, hang-gliders, or kite-fliers, this nifty gadget is a must-have for keeping tabs on current wind conditions. The tiny handheld anemometer comes in a sporty, yellow, plastic, weather-resistant casing, making it ideal for use during water activities or rainy weather. About 5 seconds after powering up, the anemometer reports the current wind speed in either miles per hour, kilometers per hour, meters per second, or Knots plus, displays wind speed on a Beaufort Scale bar graph. The module also records the maximum and average wind speeds for any 2- to 10-second period of time, and recalls them at the user?s prompting. This anemometer also measures current temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius and wind chill. The LCD screen has a backlight, making the display easy to read even in low-light conditions. The display automatically turns off every 8 seconds in order to preserve the life of the 3-volt lithium cell battery. This anemometer comes with a handy neck band to help prevent you from losing it in foul weather, and is covered by a one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde
