Tools and Hardware Reviews of La Crosse Technology EA-3010U Handheld Anemometer

Customer Review: This little device is fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to confess: an anemometer had been as object of desire for some time. Initially I got a fancy weather station that included one, but that didn't work so well because installation of the gauge was a huge hassle (find a good spot by reading the extensive manual and looking around, climb up on the roof, get it solidly nailed, etc.). And then the weather station itself died a definitive death and that was it. A pity, because I love to monitor and study the weather where I live -- huge storms and high winds, everything turning around in a matter of minutes.

A handheld anemometer, now that seemed like a great idea! I went for it. Happily I was one of those customers whose unit did not come with a dead battery, and I had it up and running in a few minutes -- helped by the clear, instructive manual which also explains the Beaufort Scale. Configuring it was easy, and I like it that you can choose units (I'm metric).

There is no way I can tell how accurate the wind meter's measurements are, but it is such fun to use it! It will give me current wind speed, maximum and average wind speeds, temperature and windchill. It is weather-resistant and there's a backlight so you can see the readings in low light conditions. It comes with a lanyard but no protective case to store it in, so I got a Case Logic Small Universal Pocket (Caselogic UNZ-2 Small Universal Pocket w/Screen Protection(Black/Silver)) and the fit is perfect. Now I'm set to monitor the crazy climate I live in.

Customer Review: Works as intended. Even detects a mild breeze!
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product to measure wind speed before flying a model helicopter outdoors. Initially I was concerned by its small size. I unpacked the tiny device, and attempted to turn it on. The interface is a bit weird, but after a few seconds it was pretty easy to get used to. A quick reference is printed on the back of the unit which helps with the ease of use.

I brought the unit outside for testing on a day when there was hardly any wind. I was surprised to see it spin up and actually indicate the wind speed at less than 1mph. The unit is rather sturdy and has an attached lanyard which makes carrying convenient. I haven't had a chance to check the accuracy of the device, but it seems to meter about right (based on weather reports)

Pros:

* Small and very lightweight
* Instructions printed on the back of the unit make usage simple without needing to carry the manual
* Measures a decent range of wind speeds

Cons:

* Directional. This device must be in line with the wind, since it does not have a vane to orient the impeller to the wind. This could cause some inaccuracy in measurement

* Impeller is small and possibly fragile. I wouldn't recommend using this in hurricane-force winds, but it will probably hold up in a thunderstorm.

* Interface is a bit awkward at first. You mush hold the power button to turn the unit on.

Overall, a solid product that can fit in your shirt pocket and measure wind speed conveniently.

Customer Review: Be Careful When Amazon Is The Seller!
Summary: 5 Stars

Fine little anemometer. I have two thanks to Amazon. Have had good results when shopping from Amazon listed sellers...BUT, be careful when buying directly from Amazon. The first anemometer had a dead battery, a $5 item. So I CALLED Amazon. This is hard enough to do; Amazon's web pages say there is a phone number but I never found it. I went to a site that complained about Amazon to locate the phone number. Amazon's representative said a replacement battery could not be provided although he knew the batteries price. I could return the unit. I bought it because I wanted to use it, so I bought a battery. Amazon was to credit my account with the $5 which eventually they did. Then I received a second Anemometer with an invoice showing a cost of $0. I actually thought Amazon was correcting their original mistake in a very generous manner...WRONG! Silly me, I was eventually billed for a second anemometer. Amazon's emails do not address the problem. Apparently I'm to be inconvienced by their mistakes without any consideration. I'll still shop Amazon sellers, BUT, I WILL NOT BUY ANYTHING ELSE WHEN AMAZON IS THE SELLER. They have no idea of customer service.

Customer Review: Had to return this unit
Summary: 1 Stars

When I received my La Crosse EA-3010U anemometer everything worked fine for a few minutes, then it stopped giving me wind readings. The temperature was showing on the display, but the wind was not. I had read other reviews mentioning their battery was dead, so I called La Crosse customer service and they told me to replace the battery. When I put a new battery in the unit, it worked fine for a few hrs, then it stopped registering wind speed. I put the original battery back in the unit and it worked fine for just a few minutes, then same problem. At this point I lost faith in the quality of this unit and felt it was better to get a Kestrel Anemometer as a replacement. While I did have the La Crosse unit a few days, I did notice that it takes a long time to get the correct temperature when taking it outdoors from the indoors. It seems that you get what you pay for when it comes to anemometers. I have not received my Kestrel anemometer yet so I have no comment on it.

Customer Review: Works fine!!!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

First i would like to say to the guy who bad mouthed Amazon.....My battery was fully charged and the unit works just fine for what it is! If U want a High tech weather station go spend a zillion bucks!! In my book Amazon "ROCKS!" I have Never had a bad purchase from them!!! It would have been nice to have a cover for it but for 40 bucks it is still worth it! Im sure I can go to any # of stores and find a cheap cell phone cover to fit nicely. I fly expensive RC sailplanes...And now I have an estimate of the wind before I toss a 800 dollar plane off a cliff!!! How ignorant can some people be to figure anything that comes with batterys will still be good!!! Any time I buy something with batterys, I toss them and replace them with GOOD...QUALITY....CHARGED.....Batterys! DUHH!!! Thanks Amazon!!....... Once again, you delivered a good product at a price NO one can beat. Dave
