Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lasko 12" Oscillating Table Fan

Customer Review: Perfect! Quiet! Made in the U.S.A.!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this fan a year ago thanks to the great review by dontwannabeageek, who had the same basic criteria I did.

I wanted a fan primarily to use when I'm on the elliptical machine Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer, and also for use in the living room enabling me to use the A/C less frequently.

Pros: It's super quiet, even on high (and I'm pretty sensitive to noise), moves enough air to keep me cool when exercising, it's easy to clean because the grille is removable, AND it's made in America. Yay! The neutral color makes it unobtrusive, and blends in with any decor. It's also light weight, so it's easy to move around, yet very sturdy. It oscillates and tilts up and down. It's exactly what I was looking for and has every feature I wanted.

Assembly Tips: The round part that screws down over the fan blades to lock them in is tightened counter-clockwise, which is backward from the usual way. Tighten till just snug, don't over tighten. Also, when attaching the grille, it helps to have a flat head/slot type screwdriver to push the tabs in, and also for removing the grille for cleaning.

Note: The year before I had purchased the Honeywell HT800 Super Turbo High Performance Fan, Black in white, and it was so noisy I couldn't stand it. I wish I had found the Lasko fan then!

Bottom Line: I love the fan so much, I bought a second one for the bedroom a few weeks later.

P.S. Usage Tip: I also got this remote switch Super Switch Wireless Remote so I could set the fan across the room, and be able to turn it on and off from the bed. Not out of laziness, but if halfway through the night you feel cold/hot, you don't have to rouse yourself out of bed, or disturb your partner. It would also be good for someone with mobility problems.

Customer Review: Very quiet, kind of plastic-y, first order arrived broken
Summary: 4 Stars

I've only had this fan for a few weeks, but here's my take so far. First, it arrived broken - a cap used to hold the top of the fan to the base was broken when it arrived. Amazon immediately shipped me a new one, but the breakage only added to my concern that this is a fan made of plastic, and it feels cheap. It works, so far, and it's inexpensive, and it is very quiet for a fan, so those are the pluses. My first fan of this type, these oscillating fans, I got from a hardware store 20 years ago. The thing worked for 18 years, then died. It was metal. These new fans feel cheaper, and I have a hard time imagining them working for 20 years (got a fan from a different company a few years back and it died after 2 to 3 years). No idea how long this one will last, and it is inexpensive, so we'll see.

Customer Review: Broken Machine Housing Case
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this item as new. The only problem I have with the fan is that when I opened the box after receiving it, I noticed that the portion of the plastic housing (that covers the motor that drives the fan), where it is supposed to be attached by a screw to the back of the motor that drives the fan was broken off at that location around the screw. It seem to me that this was a returned defective product by a previous customer (My opinion). I would have returned the product to Amazon.com but I was in dire need of a fan at the time, and it does not cost much, so I kept it. I just hope that Amazon.com is not in the habit of reselling items as new products when these items have been returned as defective by previous customers.

Customer Review: Not the best, Not the worst.
Summary: 3 Stars

The fan is cheaply made, cheap plastic, flimsy blade, very flimsy everything. Well it didn't take long before the first problem occurred, not even a few hours into running an extremely annoying CLICKING sound as it rotates, and there is nothing you can do about it, I took it apart, checked for lose screws, nothing.

Also this fan is extremely loud just by itself. If you have a hard time sleeping with background noise, dont get this fan, it sounds like a jet engine flying through your room.

Overall, this fan does move air well, but it is loud, flimsy, and poorly made.

Customer Review: Product Isn't Bad for the money
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased the fan to use at work. It was easy to put together for the most part, but almost all the parts are plastic. This caused me some problems when it came to the part used to secure the fan blades onto the fan. This part doesn't come pre-threaded so you have to basically force it onto the screw. And for me, I couldn't get a snug-enough fit for the fan to be quiet. I ended up taking the fan apart, folding up a paper towel, putting a hole in the center of the towel, putting it on the screw and then putting the plastic piece back on again. After I did this, the fan was amazingly quiet.
