Customer Review: Very loud even on the lowest setting

I bought this fan based on all of the great reviews here. While it is certainly true that this fan manages to blow a lot of air (especially for its size), I found it too loud to use in my apartment.
I believe it stated on the box that the fan would work well in a garage (where there would be higher levels of ambient noise).
I'm not really sure this fan is meant for home use (although a lot of people do say in their reviews they use it in their home and are able to sleep at night...) Personally, I wasn't able to sleep with this fan turned on. I would say that even on the lowest speed setting, this fan is louder than most fans on their highest settings. I could envision using this fan in a gym or outdoors, but not in my bedroom at night.
Amazon was gracious enough to allow me to return this fan (the only product I've ever returned to Amazon) and I bought a "normal" Lasko fan from a local store that had fan speeds which better suited my tolerance for noise.

My home has only a couple of inefficient older window ACs - so ordered this fan to reduce energy usage and better distribute the air, particularly to a back room without AC. I chose this particular model because I wanted a high level of output but a unit that would not completely block a hallway or doorway and would hopefully be relatively quiet. Overall I am quite pleased, as this unit does meet all my requirements. Not silent of course but suprisingly quiet for the large volume of air it puts out. The fan can be set to oscillate, which it does by rotating on its base - also quietly. The louvres for directional air, the large "handle," and space saving design all make this a worthwhile choice over traditional floor fans.
My only suggestions for improving this design, since it functions much like an AC unit, might be to make it more easily cleanable and perhaps offer a version with a washable HEPA filter.

I bought two Lasko 4924's because I want to reduce my dependence on window ACs. The Lasko works as advertised - it blows air! In the living room I can run the Lasko, watch TV or listen to the stereo without a problem.
The Lasko is too load in the bedroom for me but so is the AC. I used to supplemented the AC units with a window and floor fans. I'm dropping the AC but keeping the fans to use at night with sleeping.
The Lasko is louder than the floor fan when each is on fan speed one but the trade-off is it moves more air. I turned the Lasko on fan speed three, then turned it off. I turned the floor fan on fan speed three then turned it off. Both sound like helicopters to me but I doubt I'll ever have either on speed three.
The Lasko at fan speed one does the trick for me and I'll deal with the white noise.

This fan blows, but in a good way. The fan even on the lowest setting doles out a very good breeze. If you put it on the highest setting it feels like an air conditioner. The breeze always feels nice and cool, regardless of the temperature in the house.
I live in a house with no insulation(not the best idea in New England), and cooking/eating in the kitchen this summer has been brutal. This fan has remedied that problem, we just need to hang onto the napkins now.
The fan is solidly built, and very sturdy. I have a 4 year old and a 18 month old and not having spinning blades in their face is a plus. The fan is a little on the loud side, but doesn't seem too much/if any louder than other tower fans that I own. It also works far better than the others I have. I would buy this fan again in a heartbeat.

We purchased one of this fans two years ago, still good as new. Then the long humid hot days of summer approached us here in Southern California during July-September 2009. We bought two more Lasko model 4924 fans and had them delivered within a week, when you couldn't find a single fan anywhere to purchase. We now have three, one in each room and this units keep our house cool as like having an air conditioner on. They are powerful and they last and for the price, just can't be beaten. These are floor stand height, no adjustments, and no remote control. But if you want to circulate the hot humid air out your room with a stream of cool blowing air and saving money on the air conditioner, THIS IS THE FAN! Highly recommended without compromise. Thank You!
