Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lasko 754200 Ceramic Heater with Adjustable Thermostat

Customer Review: Perfect Little Heater!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're someone like me who can't stand to be too hot, or too cold, this is the ideal heater for you. This nifty little heater packs quite a bunch, despite it's size and cost. It's user friendly, and all it takes (to go from hot to cold / or vice versa) is a turn of dial. It's small, compact, easy to carry (due to it's built in handle), and the cord can extend pretty far too!

: Pro's :
- Very simple interface - extremely user friendly. It has two dials. (Zero [Off], Fan, 1 [Heat], & 2 [Heat] // Second dial is the temperature control), how much easier can it get?
- Ideal for small rooms (dorm rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, offices, etc...)
- Easy to move (has built in handle).
- Light weight.
- Cute design (has a very modern-esk appeal to it. It's not fancy, but it's not terribly plain either).
- Has adjustable thermostat that goes from light heat/cool to VERY HOT heat/cool.
- Minimal amount of noise (won't bother those who aren't light sleepers).
- Durable. (I don't recommend throwing it around, but it has been dropped twice and I've had no problems)
- Power down is quick and painless. Takes a few minutes to go from hot to "this thing was on?" cold.

: Con's :
- Heater has to be placed fairly close to you in order for the cold/heat to actually reach you. Depending on your hot/cold preferences, the normal/recommended length away from your body should be between a two to six feet. IF, on the heat setting, the heater is placed closer to user than two feet, it will be extremely uncomfortable and will most likely burn user(s) skin if left stationary.
- For light sleepers/those who need silence while sleeping - this is a terrible product for you. The heater isn't loud, but it isn't quiet either.
- Can get TOO hot. Over time, even the lowest of settings (heating only option) can get a little uncomfortable. You may have to adjust it periodically.
- Between setting ONE and TWO (as listed on first dial), there is no noticeable differences between those two heat settings.

: DO NOT :
- DO NOT Place near/point directly at (and leave unattended) fabric furniture. Direct heat + fabric = not good!
- DO NOT Place on a wood/glossy desk. Lasko Heater will move about due to vibrations and will most likely fall off if left unattended.

: DO :
- Keep the fan opening clean/dust free. Extremely quick and painless task and it can be done with a VERY damp wash cloth or paper towel. Turn off and unplug heater before cleaning fan.
- Keep away from small children/babies. Heater can get too hot, and can be harmful to young children if the face of heater is touched.

Overall, I'd give this heater a 9/10. : D

Customer Review: Wee heater with BIG warmth!
Summary: 5 Stars

There are two kinds of space heaters in the world: the kind that heat rooms and the kind that heat people. This teeny unit can actually do both, provided that you either

a) point it directly at you, reasonably nearby or
b) are in an incredibly small room.

I had originally bought this little thing to keep me from freezing to death in my small (9x10-ish, w/low-ceilings) Upstate NY office. Oil was crazy expensive that year so we switched to a wood burning stove but the heat didn't make it to my upstairs batcave of an office. But with this dreamy thing under my desk I would warm up in minutes, even with the door open. If I closed the door? Toasty all over in about an hour. I'm talking about a poorly insulated, drafty, single-pane windowed room in a 100 year-old house with NO other heat source. Granted, a tiny, tiny room, but still. For a $20 heater, I was very pleased.

Now I've moved way farther South where we don't have 20F December days, BUT we do have another 100 year-old house, this time with very high ceilings, drafty windows, zero insulation and no heat source at all (I know, I know: we can really pick 'em). When it's 55F outside w/100% humidity it's an intolerable 45F inside. Seriously. It's 45F in my livingroom. It stinks.

The wee Lasko is NOT capable of heating the comparatively large rooms in this house BUT it is perfectly capable of keeping me warm enough to type this review. It's on it's highest setting (really the "adjustable thermostat" claim is silly. It's essentially just "really hot" or "less-really hot". There's no middle ground) and it's aimed at my mid-section. When I step away from my desk I simply turn it off. No sense running it when I'm not sitting in front of it. Just a waste of energy.

I generally run it for several hours at a time and it does not get hot on the sides or top. The unit seems safe enough, but I'm not sure I'd sleep with it on. Might worry me a little. It's not exactly gorgeous, but what space heater is? It's so little that it doesn't matter what it looks like. You'll forget it's there.

Don't expect this thing to replace your central heating, if you're lucky enough to have it, but it's exactly the right heater to heat YOU wherever you may be sitting or standing.

Customer Review: LASKO 754200 VS HOLMES HFH111T
Summary: 4 Stars

I needed a couple of new inexpensive space heaters so I decided to do a bake off between this LASKO 754200 and the HOLMES HFH111T.

Both have a single fan speed, and a choice of fan only, low heat, and high heat.
Both have a thermostat which will turn the unit off once the desired temperature is reached.
Both have internal over temperature protection which needs to be reset by unplugging the device and letting things cool down.

LASKO PLUS

The light is lit if the unit is plugged in so you know if it's plugged in by a look only. I want to leave space heaters unplugged when I'm not around and this makes it easy to tell.

Quieter than HOLMES: ~55DB vs the HOLMES 60DB

Seems more efficient at heating a given volume of air. Passing my hand in front of either unit at about 18 inches away with heat on high, my hand got rather hot with the LASKO which seemed to have good even hot air distribution over an arc +/-20 degrees of center, but the HOLMES air distribution seemed uneven with more air going to one side, and my hand never got uncomfortable.

HOLMES PLUS

Simpler packaging: no internal packaging.... LASKO had: 2 pieces of pressed formed cardboard, plastic wrapping and tape to recycle.

The light is lit once the switch is no longer in the OFF position, even if the thermostat has caused the fan to turn off. Thus you can look at the light to know that the heater *may* be on. With the LASKO you need to look at the switch to make sure it's going to stay off.

More sensitive thermostat. It takes only a 5 or 10 degree rotation to get the thermostat to go on or off, while the LASKO took about 30 degrees.

May very well move more air for the noise.

Tip over protection. It has a weight on a switch. If the unit leaves vertical by more then 60 degrees tipping front or back, the unit will shut off.

BOTTOM LINE

If no kids or cats I'd recommend LASKO. If tip over is a concern, the the HOLMES is an acceptable low cost solution.

The LASKO will go in my office where I will appreciate the quiet and the more direct heat, and the HOMES will in the bathroom where the noise and uneven direct heating is less of an issue.

Customer Review: Nice little office heater
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this heater because I was sick to death of complaining that I was cold at work and always sitting with a blanket over my lap or never taking my jacket off. Now it sits under my desk about two feet from my legs and keeps me toasty warm while the so-called "heating system" in my office blows cold air on me. I was looking for something a tiny bit quieter but the noise is acceptable - it has a sound level of a small clip fan, one of the ones that are about 8" in diameter, on the low setting and, after all, it is a fan of sorts so a certain noise-level is a given. It is also a little quieter due to the fact that it's underneath my desk, not sitting on top of it. Also, I've noticed that the noise kind of cuts the buzz of the lights in my office which is pretty irritating.

The controls are easy to read and clear to use. The "power" on the left has four settings: Off, fan (w/ no heat), low heat and high heat. The temperature setting doesn't actually control the temperature of the air that's coming out of the unit, that is a constant. What it does is sets the thermostat inside the unit to reach a certain temperature, say 70 degrees, and then turn the unit off. When it gets colder than 70 degrees the unit clicks back on, returns the space to that temperature and then turns off again similar to the way your home's HVAC system turns on and off to maintain temperature in your home. If the turning on and off bugs you, just keep the thermostat on the highest setting and it should run constantly.

The face of the unit gets a little bit warm to the touch after it turns off but not so badly that it burns me to touch it immediately after (though I have my thermostat set to less than half-way to the hottest setting, like a third of the way or around there). I tend to kick my shoes off when I'm sitting and if my feet get a little chilly I just hold them in front of the heater or about 10 seconds and I'm good to go again.

Overall, a nice product. Does what I want it to do, does it with a little more noise than I expected but it is acceptable and I no longer have to wear a hat, gloves, scarf and thick socks to work every day. =^)

Customer Review: A little dynamo!!
Summary: 5 Stars

When I needed some space heaters, I turned to the web and to Amazon to read reviews, like I do with most everything I buy. This Lasko heater got rave reviews, but I thought it was too small for what I needed -- using it to heat an average-sized room instead of relying on my oil furnace (I'm hoping to save money, as oil's price is ridiculous). But I bought it anyway, and today I received my second one! This little thing is truly amazing to me. I can just compare it to all that heat that comes out of a little hair dryer.

Let me give you an example. I sleep without any heat at all in the house, and two nights ago, the outside temperature got down into the 30's. I woke up, and the thermostat in my living room read 50 degrees. I cut on my Lasko heater, and, within 10 minutes, the room was a toasty 68 degrees! I actually used it to heat up the room, while an oil-filled radiator heater was just clicking and clacking and starting to heat up a bit. (I then used the radiator to maintain the heat that the Lasko produced.)

Another observation is that the cord is pretty thick and it doesn't get very hot when in use like another heater I have. I read that it's normal for cords on heaters to get a little warm, but I still don't like that because it makes me feel that it could overheat and catch fire.

This heater is much smaller than I thought it was, and is just a little bigger than a 5 lb bag of flour. It is easy to carry around with the handle area in the back of the unit, and it doesn't get hot to the touch, so you can pick it up right after you turn it off. The back of the unit accumulates dust, and you can vacuum off the grate. There are 3 settings: fan only, low, and high. Another dial adjusts the temperature up or down, and a nice feature is that you can adjust the temp along a whole dial, instead of in 5-degree increments like some other heaters.

I will recommemd this heater to anyone and everyone!
