Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lasko 754200 Ceramic Heater with Adjustable Thermostat

Customer Review: Lasko 754200 Ceramic Heater with Adjustable Thermostat
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally bought this heater for a friend who needed a smaller size heater than the larger one she received for a Christmas present. She wanted the smaller one as she lives in an apartment and has limited space. I was swapping her for the larger one. When the box first arrived, I was worried due to the small size of the heater, if it would do the job of providing the heat that was needed. I decided to try it out first to see if it would work well enough.

It certainly made a believer out of me. For the size, price this is an excellent heater. I have two Delonghi mineral heaters and this little heater does just as well as these more expensive heaters. The benefits are its size (easy to move to different rooms, takes up little space for storage, etc), and the fact that the other than the front panal (which isn't extremly hot), the rest of the heater does not get hot at all. With mineral oil heaters, they can get very hot and burn a small child, etc.

The construction of the heater is solid - not cheap. For the price, this is great. As it turns out, I ended up ordering 5 more of these for myself and older children - who were also impressed. Due to the cold temperatures we are having in Kentucky (15-30 degrees) our electric bills have been high (all electric heat). We are conserving now and have set our temperature back to 68-70 degrees. Rather than paying high costs to heat the entire house, we are using the small heaters in the areas we are in only during the times we are at home. I like these smaller heaters much more than my larger ones as they take up little space and are easy to relocate.

As for the fan noise mentioned in some of the reviews, yes there is a noise. However, I don't even notice it as it is running. Personally, if it helps save on the high electric bills to heat the entire house, I feel this is a small price to pay for being warm!!

Customer Review: Loud but cheap
Summary: 2 Stars

Having read some of the reviews here, I was led to believe that this heater was not "too" loud. However, this product sounds like a small jet engine.

I happen to have some unfortunate expertise in noise detection. Due to having been a stupid 20-year-old who thought he was going to be a rock star (not implying that I am now smarter than everybody else), I have bilateral hearing loss and wear two hearing aids, so one cannot accuse me of having oversensitive ears. Nevertheless, the noise level on these units is excessive, far more than similar heaters.

My wife is still a musician. Because she is smarter than I, she always protected her ears and still has very sensitive hearing. If your spouse has sensitive ears, please search elsewhere.

In any case, if noise is a concern for you, keep searching.

Any product is comprised of three general components: materials, labor, and transportation to the retailer. Sometimes, there are middlemen, adding to labor (handling) and transportation costs. A basic forced-air space heater needs a housing, fan, heating element, and wiring and electrical controls (electronics).

That leaves labor and transportation. Since most products are made in China, they have to be shipped halfway around the world to get to America, about as far as a product can travel, if it comes directly from factory to retailer.

To make a $20 heater, materials must be cheap. The fan bearings are the biggest reason a forced-air space heater is either noisy or quiet. So simple logic indicates that cheap space heaters will more likely be noisy. I should have reasoned this out in the first place!

Customer Review: Perfect for those with small rooms and no small children
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this heater to supplement my home's central heatting system. I have several small rooms, so I bought 2 of these. It has 3 fan speed settings:Fan only, lo heat, high heat. It is tiny, so it fits nearly anywhere you would need it. Yet, it puts out a large amount of heat, so it can warm you up quickly. It has a thermostat, so it will turn on and off to regulate temperature. It is not meant to be used in a bathroom because it's not waterproof. Ironically, it works best in a bathroom. I put one in there, and make sure it doesn't get wet. The thermostat works fine, but only in a room small enough for the heater to shut off after the desired temperature is reached. It took 8 hours to heat the bathroom from 64 to 70 degrees and shut itself off. In even a small room, the heater will seemingly never put off enough heat to have the thermostat function correctly. In small rooms it works great as a directional heater, throwing a good amount of heat 5-6 feet away. It's fairly quiet considering it uses a fan, but unless you're a fairly heavy sleeper, I wouldn't use it in a bedroom. There is also no stand, so I had to put it on my own stand to warm my upper body, although it's small size makes it ideal for under the desk. My biggest concern, is it's lack of a shut-off switch should it over-turn. It has an over-heat shut-off, but if you have pets or small children who could knock this over, I would look elsewhere. The front panel doesn't get very hot, but it gets hot enough that I would be very concerned that it doesn't shut-off if turned over. Since I have no pets or small children, it works perfect for my needs, and I recommend this heater.

Customer Review: It's a heater!
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this heater because the stove isn't doing it's job of heating the house. I was skeptical at the low price and after much scouring the internet for reviews, I found this product to be what I was looking for.

The heater does the job! It's a compact little heater that puts out a lot of heat for a small room. I would say my room is 30ft by 30ft. Enough for a california king, a dressor, and a computer desk to squeeze in. I use this heater at the foot of my bed. I turn the heater on medium and let it do it's thing. About 10 minutes later, the room is nice and toasty. I have often found myself sweating in the middle of the night eve on medium. But that's ok. (used during Georgia winter season at temperatures not exceeding 10 degrees.) Also, the heater is decently energy efficient and I have not seen a big increase in my electric bill.

The item is straight forward. A knob with 3 settings (fan, speed 1, speed 2) and another knob with heat settings (no numbers, just intensity.) The fan cuts off when it reaches your temperature, but cuts back on when it cools off. There are no safety features. If it gets knocked over, it still runs. Also, the heater has cut my circuit breaker a couple times and does not run in a surge protector. The heater doesn't run completely quiet, buts a very tolerable noise. After 6 months of daily use, the 1st speed has become a bit noisy. But I'm always using it on 2, so it doesn't bother me.

Overall, I am very happy with this product and recommend to anyone with a small space that needs to be heated (and is a very safe environment so it doesn't get knocked over.)

Customer Review: Excellent little space heater!
Summary: 5 Stars

Several years ago I purchased 2 heaters quite like this and really liked them. One was broken in an accident and I also had developed a need for a couple of additional ones ... but I could not find the orginial product anymore.

So, after some online searching, I determined that these Lasko-branded products are fundamentally the same heaters and ordered 3.

They work GREAT. One of them even does a creditable job of heating the little 8'x25' cinderblock-wall & concrete-floor Shop that I created in a corner room in my unheated (but partially bermed) basement.

For extended use, the thermostat requires some experimentation to get the right temperature setting for each space, but after that the environment is comfortably consistent, with the fan cycling off when the requested temperature is reached.

IIRC, someone(s?) in an earlier review mentioned that the 2nd speed on their fan did not work. That is because there *is* no 2nd fan speed ... they are confused with the 2nd *heat* setting. BTW, the fan is relatively quiet.

I have my Lasko heaters hooked to wireless X10 appliance modules so that I don't leave them on all of the time or have to turn them on when I, say, walk into the cold bathroom. Prior to heading for that bathroom, I hit the appropriate ON button on the remote for that bathroom and give it a minute or few to warm up a bit before going in that direction.

Keeping the house thermostat low and utilizing on-demand pinpoint heating with these little heaters helps me save a LOT of money on my heating bills during the winter.
