Tools and Hardware Reviews of Life Gear LL01Y LifeLight

Customer Review: Functions not so functional.
Summary: 2 Stars

Pros:
-Multiple options for power source (crank, 3 AAA batteries, etc.)
-Multiple functions (lantern, night light, radio, etc.)

Cons:
-Light isn't very bright.
-Although it has a lot of functions, they don't work great.
-Crank power diminished quickly.

I was really excited to receive this lantern, I thought the multiple functions would be really useful, but overall I didn't find this lantern to be all that great.

I was definitely disappointed with how bright this lantern got.
After cranking it for a few minutes, it would only stay reasonably bright for about a minute, and then it would dim a little.
We ended up using 3 AAA batteries as our power source so the light would remain at it's brightest.
But even at it's brightest, it's not a very good light source.

According to the manufacturer's web site, when the night light is in use it emits an ultrasonic frequency to repel mosquitoes. Not really sure if it repels the mosquitoes, but the night light feature was probably the best thing about this lantern.

The 2nd feature we used the most other than the night light was connecting our mp3 player to it to listen to music through its speakers. The sound quality isn't amazing, but more comfortable than using headphones.

For the price, it was worth a try.
But we're still going to look around for something better for future camping trips.

Customer Review: Survived Hurricane Ike - 8 Days with No Power, BUT I HAD THIS LIGHT!
Summary: 4 Stars

UPDATED REVIEW:

Bought this in January and it must have been prophetic. By September, in rolled Hurricane Ike and knocked my tree limbs down and my power out for 8 days!

This was our choice light for bathing/brushing teeth at nighttime. In dark bathrooms, this crank light came in incredibly handy! Instead of only having limited viewable space, like that of a flashlight, this light flooded the entire bathroom with light making things like flossing teeth possible. We just carried this thing around by the neck and it worked out just fine!

We also got major usage out of the "nightlight" feature, which stayed illuminated throughout the entire nights, but it did dim down over the many hours and would need another little crank before daybreak to keep it going. It is an ENORMOUS comfort to have a small light going all night, if nothing else, to keep you from tripping while going to the bathroom. Also, it is comforting knowing that the little light won't burn down the house, like a candle could.

We never used any of the other features on this light because we already had other devices that had those same features, but I can tell you, I believe this baby is worth the price, just for the lantern and nightlight.

The best recommendation can only come from experience and from my experience, this was a real lifesaver and got just as much use by me and hubby as any flashlight did.

Customer Review: Good for emergencies
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought 3 of these for work when they were a deal-of-the-day. It seemed like a good thing to have in case of a power outage on the evening shift. The radio is a good feature in case of earthquake or other natural disaster.

The quality is decent for the price. Not as good as the Eton ones sold by the Red Cross, but they're 1/3 to 1/2 the price so if it's just going to sit in your emergency kit, it's probably a good way to go.

It can run on 3 AAA batteries or a charge by the crank. It says a 1 minute charge will last 45 minutes. I'm wondering if this may be dependent on what features you use. I started to see the intensity of the LEDs decrease after about 5 minutes, but I would call them usable until maybe 20-25 minutes before I'd need to turn the crank again.

There are 3 sets of 3 white LEDs and you can have either all 9 on or only 3. There are also 6 red LEDs that flash. You can have them flashing instead of using the white lights. There is a nightlight feature (single LED on the side near the radio controls) and then the radio and siren. It also comes with a mobile phone charger that is labeled as a Nokia adapter. Packaging claims they will send you a free one if you log in to their website.

Hopefully we'll never have to use them, but it's nice to know they're there.

Customer Review: great option, light, functional
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't have many new things to say about this. I read all the reviews and it is what I was hoping for. The charge holds for awhile. I wound it, waited 5 days and then used it, and it lasted as long as described. The lack of batteries makes it very light and the speaker/radio/charger works very well. The speakers get pretty loud but isn't the best quality ever. still a great feature. I agree that a great improvement would be to create water resistant controls on the front and ditch the plastic cover, but it is very functional. I think this is a good lamp for lighting a tent, but may not be light enough to easily navigate dark trails because the light isn't directed anywhere. While it seems a bit bulky at first, I found that its a good size for holding; it fits comfortably in my grip (like a small water bottle). The winding is not difficult and the radio, when you hit a good station, is perfectly clear. It is nice that it includes the audio jack and motorola charger. If you pay shipping, you can get any phone charger for free. I haven't sent out a request, so I'm not sure how long that takes. A great idea for casual use and emergency situations. Maybe not enough for a more active adventurer. A hand-held comes in handy too.

Customer Review: isolation outdoors product, not for hurricane
Summary: 2 Stars

I have model LL01 purchased sometimes in 2005 or 6. First use of this was in Hurricane Ike in 2008, during total blackout. Very disappointed.

The radio was grossly inadequate. I could hear better with my high-quality pocket radio. The siren is so weak--better to shout.

The light was amusing. It's extremely bright LED, as long as it has enough power. However, one look into this destroys one's night vision. Additionaly, takes a lot of constant cranking to retain good lighting.

There are some good uses of this light, and I found one of these. Suppose one wants a light to hang on a tree to act as a beacon for the campground. Surprisingly, this light will emit light for a long period of time, and in pitch darkness, with good night vision, one can see this from some distance (I suspect). Problem is, it doesn't have a hanger to hang onto a tree for this purpose.

Also, using its low light setting, this light can last nearly all night. This unit served comparably to a hallway night light for me during the hurricane.

Also, I imagine, if you're being rescued in the dark, the other light settings can be useful.
