Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lutron MAW600H-WH Electronics Maestro Duo Dimmer, White single pole switch

Customer Review: Maestros are one of the two that are ideal for gentle room lighting
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this and the Lutron Abella Dimmers, which complement conventional switches (smaller opening), in several rooms of my home. Know that the Maestro delayed-turn-off lasts about 10-15 seconds, the Abellas have a 20-40 second delay (time to cross a room). The adjustable dimmer rocker switch on this Maestro is a little bit easier to reach out and change, but with either switch, you'll get used to it.

Lutron dimmers illuminate, and extinguish, lights in a brief, steady action, so you don't have the "shock" of the instant on or instant off of conventional switches. Depending on the application, this is one of the best selling points. The ability to reduce the brightness is said to save electrical expenses. And as said, you can have a choice of dimmed setting of "full bright" when you turn the light on. Likewise, you can switch lights from "full bright" to "dimmed" setting by tapping the button twice (one starts the "turn off" the second sets to dimmed setting), and the lights will not go all the way out, and then come on again. I use these dimmers for most of my overhead lights, and always use them in the kitchen and dining rooms.

Added feature: programmability. You can set a preset "On" setting (default is, turns on to the brightness previously set when turned off), the duration of the "fade on," and the duration of the "fade off." Lutron's instructions provide suggestions for these: faster turn on for kitchens or the first light turned on in a room, slower turn on for auxiliary cabinet lights, artwork lights, etc. These settings are very easy to set, and you can restore the factory defaults in 15 seconds. ... Does ANY other digital dimmer provide for such flexibility and personal customization? I sincerely doubt it.

Very smart little light switch.

WARNING: you usually cannot use these with CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps), a specific dimmer model is necessary for those.

Customer Review: I have purchased 7 and replaced 6 in 5 areas.
Summary: 4 Stars

My electrician told me that I must have a lot of money to waste as he installed these switches in our remodel.

If you live alone and never entertain this is a great product. Guest don't tap, they punch and break them. Children tap them and say, "wow" then tap, Tap, TAP too hard and break them. Visiting in-laws and the elderly need help operating those "crazy light switches." Yes, I've heard granddad say I should just get a $.79 switch that works.
After 7 years living with Lutron Maestro dimmers installed in my homes bathroom 6 of 7 have had the main tap pad punched in and broken.
Only one switch has survived from the initial remodel because it is in the far corner of the room controlling the lighting in an always on art nook.

Take careful note of the reviews. Only the new installs are getting high reviews. The folks that have lived with this product a while are throwing away hundreds of dollars in switches and shopping for a different brand.

UPDATE: 9/2/2010 After Contacting Lutron.

In all fairness of my critical review Lutron has came through making good on 7-8 year old dimmers. The following is the return e-mail I received from Lutron. I'll give them 5 stars for service.

"Thank you for contacting us. We did have a higher than anticipated rate failure in certain date code for Maestro Dimmers. The good news is that the design for this switch has been changed and the problem have been fixed. We do offer a standard one year warranty for all wall box products, but for this product defect we do offer to replace all Maestro Dimmers in your house at no charge. Please e-mail us back or call us with a list of the Maestro dimmer models and colors. Upon receiving this list we will send new replacement dimmers with prepaid return shipping label to send back the old ones. We apologize for inconvenience this may have caused. If you have any additional questions, please contact our 24/7 technical support at (800)523-9466.

Customer Review: Wonderful dimmers except for guests who have not read the instructions manual.
Summary: 1 Stars

Functionally and aesthetically, the Lutron dimmer switches are great. I liked them enough to install them in my entire house. They worked wonderfully until we had guests over one night. Not knowing to tap lightly to turn them on and off, our guests pressed the switches like normal rocker switches. Unfortunately these switches are not design for the force required to control normal switches. In one night, $400 dollars worth of Lutron dimmer switches were broken.

Is it the fault of the guests? I think not. The manufacturer needs to create light switches that should withstand normal use by anyone without breaking. It does not require much engineering or manufacturing cost to make it more durable (couple of cents). One expects more durability since these switches cost more than $25 each.

I would never use switches from Lutron again or any manufacturer who makes fragile switches.

Customer Review: Terrible switches, don't last very long
Summary: 1 Stars

Had 8 of these installed about 5 years ago, and one by one, eventually they all burnt out or the rocker portion of the switch would stop rocking. Then i noticed they changed the design - smaller light holes, heavier clicking action, seemed to be more reliable, and the smaller lights on the dimmer probably generates less heat than the previous design which is definitely a good thing. So as the old ones I had died off, I replaced them all with the new models. And guess what? They're starting to break too. Less frequently than the previous ones but breaking nonetheless. As they're dying i'm replacing them with regular on/off switches, I have yet to have one of those fail. YMMV of course, but just thought I'd share my experience - for the prices of these dimmers, they should last alot longer.

Customer Review: NOT Multi-Location
Summary: 1 Stars

I searched Amazon for MA-600-WH and got this product (MAW-600H-WH). At the time of my purchase (and this review) the product description mentions "multiple location" dimming three times and the "frequently bought together" section lists the "companion dimmer" (MA-R-WH used for other locations). So, I figured it was a version of what I wanted.

Unfortunately this dimmer is single-pole (per the packaging and I confirmed it does not have the third non-ground connectino necessary to work with the companion dimmers) so it is not what I wanted.

I like Amazon (this if the first time in over 10 years of buying stuff through Amazon I'll be returning an item) and the Lutron dimmers (keep buying more)...but this is an unnecessary hassle I figured I'd warn others about.
