Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lux Products BBHP2110 Smart Temp Programmable Heat Pump ThermostatCustomer Review: Easy to install/Program Summary: 5 Stars
My old thermostat didn't use my aux heat correctly, or at even at all, so we got in a VERY bad habit of running off emergency heat. When we got our highest power bill ever... wow, I had to do something.
So I started looking for a thermostat that would make use of our auxiliary heat and thought that I may as well go programmable at the same time to help break us of some bad habits.
I have a friend who has Hunter 44760 who absolutely loves it. I just couldn't find it available anywhere other than ebay, and I wanted to install something fast. I knew Lux has a great reputation, and just got a fresh Amazon Prime membership, so I went with this thermostat and got it shipped overnight.
The Thermostat takes 2 AA batteries. They highly suggest Duracell or Energizer, in fact the package says to ONLY use these brands. I believe they just do not want people installing cheap batteries that will cause a hassle to replace quicker, or people losing their programs.
There is an indicator that will tell you when the batteries go dead, and once you remove the batteries you have 1 minutes to place the new ones in before you lose your program. 1 minute seems like plenty of time to place the batteries in there, just have them ready when you take the old ones out.
The instructions come with a chart with other thermostat manufacture's wiring info, and some stickers to label your wires as you remove them from the old thermostat. I was pretty luck because my old thermostat was labeled the same as the new Lux.
The rest is as easy as replacing the old thermostat on the wall with the new one and attaching the wires. It took me about 15 minutes to install.
Programming is very easy. It has a dial you can switch between Weekdays, Saturday and Sunday. You set your time for the morning by pressing an up/down button, hit next to change the temperature, and then next again to do the same for day, evening and night. When you are done, turn the dial to run and you are done. Very simple.
There is a "temperature swing" setting in there that you set to determine how many degrees below the set point you want to use your aux heat to help raise the temperature. The higher you set this the less your aux heat will be used. The default is 4, I believe the max is 6. For example, if your programmed temperature during the night is 62 and your morning setting is at 69, a swing setting of 4 would use your aux heat until your temperature reaches 66 degrees. After that it relies strictly on your heat pump. I have my swing setting at 3.
There is a filter hour counter that tells you when you should change your filter, and you can calibrate the thermometer if you find out it is not ready correctly.
I haven't gotten a power bill yet so I can't comment on any savings, though I will report back. It can't make my bill any higher. I have it rated 5 stars on features and ease of installation/programming alone.
