Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lux Products TX1500E-010 Smart Temp Programmable Thermostat

Customer Review: Falls Short
Summary: 2 Stars

PROS: Very sensitive and accurate temperature, measures humidity, and cheap (on Amazon) for the features it offers.

CONS: Buttons just cheap and hard to push as the lower-end models from Lux. It also seems to me that the most important display on a thermostat is the current temperature and the target temperature. The engineers at Lux decided that you would prefer to use the unit as a clock, so the time in large bold letters, while you have to press a button to see what the current temperature is. Seems like a small detail but it becomes very annoying.

OTHER: We purchased this about 4 months ago when the button on our base model Lux stopped working. Lured by the "Soft touch" button and bright display we decided to upgrade. Very disappointed. This has the same hard-to-push buttons as the other model, but with soft plastic covers. The durability is just as poor, and it has now broke. We now have a model from Honeywell.

Customer Review: Works as advertised.
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this item in part because it can be run off the 24V system power (saving batteries) and in part based on it being a Consumer Reports for someone who doesn't want to pay top dollar for the fancier TX9000 (which has a touch screen). For under $40 it does do everything the fancier one does at 2.5x the price.

Good Stuff: Purchased at Amazon, but shipped direct from Lux. Operation is easy, as the rotating selector switch is easier than scrolling through lots of menus. If you're someone who likes physical controls, operations of this will be familiar to you. Also, if you can run it off 24V system power the AA batteries are just for backup and should last for eons.

Nor So Good Stuff: The instructions are pretty basic and one one big sheet of paper. Some people find this confusing. Also, if you take it off the wall-mounted bracket to replace the batteries it can be tough to get it back on.

Customer Review: Accurate thermostat!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a Hunter electro-mechanical thermostat that was very unpredictable. and I had to constantly get up and turn it up or down because it wouldn't start or stop when it was suppose to. I went shopping on the net for a new thermostat that worked good, and read the positive reviews here about the Lux TX1500E. I ordered the Lux, and when I got it I immediately installed it, and low and behold, it works great. It's very accurate, and starts and stops when it's suppose to. I just set the temp where I want and forget it, probably will save me some on the light bill also. It is easy to install and looks to be well made. One thing though, I thought this was the kind of thermostat that automatically goes from heat to cool, but it's not, you have to manually set it on heat or cool, but that's my fault, I didn't read the specifacations close enough. I'm very happy with the Lux TX1500E, and would very highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Swing setting quirky
Summary: 3 Stars

I have to agree w/ GP in that the swing setting feature is rather strange in how it tries to maintain temperature. We live in Hawaii and do not use the heater feature. I have the thermostat set at 76 w/ a swing setting of 8. So, I believe, the +/- 2 degrees from the swing setting, only the + will apply, i.e. when the ambient temperature in our house reaches above 78, cooling should kick in. As long as the ambient temp remains between 76-78, the a/c will not turn on.

I've found that the system will will cool the house all the way down to 74 degrees after the temp has reached 78. It seems to be trying to "fast" cool to 76.

Not sure if this is how the swing setting is supposed to work but going from 78 to 74 is a big swing as far as comfort is concerned.

I would opt for a different t-stat if I knew the above quirkiness could be avoided.

Customer Review: The PERFECT replacement. And watch your energy bill(s) go down!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This comes "pre-programmed" for those of us whom are "techno idiots".....Settings for the programable times that YOU want for your particular needs and times can be adjusted~Hey EVEN I CAN DO IT!!!!. Even nicer things about this model as opposed to the earlier models: These come with an Indiglo nightlight: whenever you push any button, the entire display panel lights up. Numbers are bold and large enough to read without glasses (and before a first cup of coffee!!;))

Asked again, I would buy this model in a heartbeat. Amazon got it here at time warp speed, and I'd recommend this to anyone that wants a simple, affordable "update" to their old, round manual "it's somewhere between freezing and hell" thermostat, this is the PERFECT reasonably priced unit for you. This unit works with wall heaters, too (which was my application in this case).
