Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lux TX1500E Smart Temp Programmable ThermostatCustomer Review: So Easy and Cool! Summary: 5 Stars
I just bought this after reading everyone's reviews. It shipped really fast and installed so easy. I never installed one of these before, but they had step by step instructions included. I just unscrewed my old manual thermostat and labeled the wires, then put this one on the wall and connected the wires to it.
For anyone who doesn't have one of these automatic thermostats you should really get one. I had an old Honeywell one and thought I'd need to do more to switch, but really you don't. When I turned the power back on for the HVAC, the AC turned on right away and has been working fine. Its so much nicer in the house because the tempature is more accurately controlled. I'm sure it will save on my electic/gas bill too!
Anyway I suggest getting this! Don't waste energy and money with the old fashion ones!
Customer Review: Simple to use Summary: 5 Stars
I have used this product in two buildings in the past and was very satisfied, in fact I have purchased three more. Instructions make the product easy to install and programming is simple and straight foreword. The ability to temporarily override the programed temperature at the touch of a button and have it automatically return to normal programming is a plus. I find this feature very useful in zones which are heated up occasionally used for sort times, and then you forget to turn down the temperature when vacating the area. Programing assumes that everyone is gone from home Monday through Friday because Saturday and Sunday require there own program settings, this is curious given there are four day work weeks and often days off fall mid week.
Customer Review: Bang-Bang control leaves you swetaing and freezing Summary: 1 Stars
While it is easy to install and program, this thermostat uses bang-bang control (i.e. it either turns the heat full ON, or OFF) with a large hysteresis. This means if you set the temperature to i.e. 68 F, the heat will remain full ON until the room reaches 70. Then it will turn off until temperature drops below 66 before repeating the cycle. Turns out I can control the temperature better myself, to prevent the hot-cold shivers, I have to keep adjusting the temperature manually.
A sensible thermostat would use some type of modulation, turning the heat on at intervals to maintain a steady temperature. The instruction sheet claims this thermostat would do that, but it doesn't.
Customer Review: Does the job... Summary: 4 Stars
I have had this model for at least 7 years and I came here to buy another TX1500 for my girlfriend. I had bought the model HD sells for her and it stinks--loses programming when the power fails. This Lux model is stone-cold reliable. Batteries (I use Duracell) have always lasted a full year in heat only use--I change them every Thanksgiving. My only complaint is the buttons require very firm pushing after several years and could have been more responsive from the beginning--this lost them 5 stars. I like the 5-1-1 programming; it requires less button pushing to program. However, don't buy it if you don't work Mon-Fri on the same schedule.
Customer Review: Don't Buy Any Thermostat On-line!!! Summary: 2 Stars
In fairness, I should say right from the top that I can neither recommend nor discourage the purchase of this unit. The thermostat arrived DOA -- in the DEAD OF WINTER!
A word to the wise: most Ace Hardware stores are now independent and no longer carry this model; if you want to buy this item, you'll probably have to do it via Amazon/acehardwareoutlet...a roundabout method that may prove disasterous in a cold climate (like Chicago). Neither Lowes nor Home Depot carry it, either. My advice: unless you live in Hawaii, buy your next thermostat from your local hardware or heating/plumbing store.
