Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lux TX9000TS Touch Screen Seven-Day Programmable Thermostat

Customer Review: Solid thermostat for 1/2 the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm giving this product five starts for the price. If it cost as much as most of its competitors with similar features, I'd probably give it four at most.

The thing that sold me on this thermostat, besides the much lower price tag, is the fact that it allows you to set your desired temperature sensitivity. Some other thermostats (e.g. Honeywell) have it pre-set to 0.5 degrees (I believe), and don't allow you to change it. That means you may save electricity, but you're killing your AC unit by constantly starting and stopping it. The default on this unit is 2 degrees, and I left it at that, but it is possible to change it.

I also like the the little knobs at the bottom of the thermostat (hidden by a slightly too-loose cover). They allow for old-fashioned fan/AC/heat setting. But the touch screen is nice too, and setting the temperature on it is what actually turns on the heater/AC, obviously.

The backlight is nice. I read you can make it stay on permanently, but I'm not sure if it's using the juice from the batteries if you do.

Speaking of batteries, they are not included for some reason... You'll need 2 AA's.

The installation was a total breeze. I didn't need instructions, and swapped out my 30 yr old analog for this baby in about 15 mins, including drilling and leveling.

I've noticed sometimes it thinks for a while before switching the AC on once I set the temperature. 2 minutes max. But more times than not it turns right on.

Needless to say I'm a happy customer. For half the price and more features than a comparable Honeywell, this is a great buy in my opinion.

Customer Review: Lux Touchscreen Themostat, Terrible interface. Don't bother. Spend a little extra and get a honeywell.

What can I say.

It was between this and the Honeywell TH8320U1003 ($30 difference).

The Lux menu is NOT intuitive. If you choose this unit, please read the manual well (It's only 6 pages).
[...]

It's very repetitive. Press Menu, Scroll, Select Set Review Programs, Choose Monday, Program Monday, Press Yes to accept and proceed and press up or down arrows to change temperature. Remember these things: Menu, Next, Scroll, Exit. Menu gets into the settings. Next switches between menu settings, Scroll allows you to browse through a specific setting, and Exit does what it implies.

You have to set MORNING, DAY, EVENING, NITE. There is no way to select 5 days and set them for the same thing. I would prefer to have the option available.

With a little practice, I could have gotten used to this thermostat, BUT the other members of the household would hate it.

This was the highest rated thermostat from Consumer Reports. I'm not sure why (I'll guess price). It works, I'll give you that, but it's so ANNOYING to program, I'm not sure how they managed not to start drinking halfway through. Seriously, I read the glowing reviews and was swayed, even with the few people who were dissenters. I should have listened and not wasted time. This unit might work as a thermostat, but the interface is TERRIBLE. If you are ok with that, peace be with you.

I returned this unit to amazon. Good riddance.

I instead ordered the Honeywell unit. I tried their virtual thermostat and was hooked.

It's MUCH easier and intuitive.

Customer Review: Excellent Customer Service from Lux!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been so pleased by this product. It was very easy to install. The large touchscreen and display size made programming a breeze. I didn't think it was possible to really like a thermostat, but this one is so easy to interface with and so attractive that I'm actually enjoying it a bit. The fact that it is a touchscreen is the best part--if I had to buy another thermostat and this model were not an option, I would definitely look for another that had a touchscreen. The unit is working flawlessly and keeping the house at a consistent temperature--much better than my old mercury thermostat.

Considering all the features of the TX9000TS, I think Lux offers this product at a very reasonable price. I have found that similar touchscreen thermostats from other companies cost much more.

Finally, I ordered this unit from a third-party seller on Amazon. On the screen there was a small defect in the coating of the touchscreen itself. I wasn't sure if the blip was supposed to be there, so I got in touch with Lux Customer Service. The response was almost immediate, and very helpful. They made every effort to understand what I was trying to describe, and once we determined that there was a problem, they agreed to send out a new one with a prepaid return envelope for my defective unit. I was so surprised at Lux's high level of customer service and their willingness to stand behind their product, since it is usually akin to pulling teeth in order to get problems like this resolved. As a result of the interaction I had with Lux, I would definitely favor their brand of thermostats in the future.

Customer Review: Not Compatible with Coleman 2-wire systems
Summary: 2 Stars

Pros:
1) Consumer Reports highest rated thermostat.
2) Very nice screen, easy to program.
3) Good wiring instructions for most systems.
4) I liked it so much I had my furnace rewired to make it work.

Cons:
1) Not compatible with Coleman 2-wire systems... I replaced a Coleman mechanical 2-wire thermostat with this LUX TX9000TS unit. The furnace has a heat/cool switch on the front of the furnace. When switched to "heat" the thermostat functions perfectly. When switched to "cool" the air conditioner runs continously and the thermostat won't control it no matter how you try to wire it. LUX said "you can't wire it to run a Coleman 2-wire system." Even Coleman said "it can't be done."

2) It was done!!! I liked the thermostat so much I had an electrician rewire it. He ran a new 4-wire hook-up from the furnace to the thermostat. He bypassed the "heat/cool" and the fans "continous/auto" switch on the furnace and rewired it to work. I would not recommend anyone attempt this but a qualified electrician. I assisted him in running the wires under the house and it took him and I 2:15 to rewire. He made numerous wiring changes in the furnace controls.

The thermostat is very nice. I was disappointed that LUX did not list this as being incompatible with Coleman systems on their website and I complained about that because I did do my research before purchasing it. I loved the thermostat but because this will cost me about $300 in total costs by the time it was rewired I rated it a "2."

Mike.

Customer Review: Great thermostat with some minor interface issues
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased four of these (4 heating zones, 2 cooling zones) to replace some early 90's Honeywell mercury based thermostats that came with the house I purchased. I have never installed a thermostat before, but it's actually not that bad, as long as you know what each wire in your old system is. In my case they were not labeled, but I was able to figure it out between researching the wire colors online (you can't always trust the color, but its a good starting point when you don't know) and a bit of trial and error. After installing one, the other three were easy. Lux provides stickers in the package so you can label the wires for future reference, which is a really nice touch.

The thermostat itself is very large, but looks fine on the wall. It's very simple to program - each day has four time settings - Morning, Day, Evening, and Night. You can configure when each time setting begins (for example, the default is that "Morning" begins at 6:00am). For each day of the week, you can configure the temperature for each time setting. The only quirky thing, noted by other reviewers, is that you have to tap the "Yes" button on each temperature to save it while you're programming. It's really easy to forget to do that, so it pays to go back and check after you've set it up.

The thermostat also has a number of advanced features, but I have not even started to explore them. If you're planning on purchasing one of these, Amazon is a good place to order it, since they're about $20 cheaper here than at the major home supply retailers.
