Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lux TX9000TS Touch Screen Seven-Day Programmable Thermostat

Customer Review: Great thermo
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this thermostat about a month back and it arrived in perfect condition. The installation is essentially foolproof; just make sure you follow the instructions concerning wire connections and you're golden.

There are some complaints in other reviews concerning the ease of programming this particular thermostat, and while it's not the most intuitive system in the world, it only takes a few minutes of playing with it to figure out how it works. The guide doesn't do as good a job of describing the procedure as it could, but like I said, it won't take you long to get it. Once the programming is complete it works great! The display is large enough to easily decipher what is happening and the touch screen is very responsive. It's also very easy to adjust the temperature in the middle of a programmed period of time. For example, you get home early and the temperature is still set either high or low to save those dollars...just tap the current temperature and up/down arrows appear to adjust the temp on the fly. That easy.

My heating system (gas furnace) has been extremely responsive to the Lux thermo...no delay in temperature adjustment. The previously installed thermo seemed to take forever to actually do what I told it to do, continuing to pump out heat or refuse to start minutes after adjusting the settings. When I move the temp up on the new unit, you instantly hear that reassuring "click" of response and feel the air blow in no time. A fantastic product through and through.

Customer Review: No thought was given to the touchscreen interface
Summary: 1 Stars

The touchscreen interface is not nearly as intuitive as it could be. Changing the temperature is the whole point of thermostats and the most often used keys, and yet, you have to hit the temperature display before up and down arrow keys are displayed so only then you can control the temperature? The arrow keys are located at a portion of the screen that isn't even being used when it is in normal mode, why not just have them always displayed so that you have one less 'button' to press? Copying program data from one day to another is also backwards from what it should be. When you hit copy, you would think that the current day you are on would be copied to the next, but no, it copies the previous days data to the one you are currently on, erasing any changes you just made to it.

The thermostat also only displays what the temperature is set to. It does not display what the current temperature actually is. There is no way (that I know of) to show what the current temperature is. How do you know if the house is hotter than what it is set to? You will have to get a thermometer separately from this.

Also, while in Celsius mode, there are no half degrees, so you lose precision in what you can set it to if you want to use Celsius instead of F. My old cheapo thermostat had half degrees, so I don't know why this more expensive model can't. Sorta makes this thermostat a no-go if you are in a country other than the USA.

Customer Review: Minutes to install-Works perfectly
Summary: 5 Stars

Couldn't be happier. I did buy mine off Ebay but the price here for a new unit is a great one. I have a oil furnace with a 3 1/2 ton AC unit. The old dial was a honeywell that you had to turn the dial, and couldn't see at night.

Hooked the white, yellow and green wire. Then attached the red with a jumper exactly as the honeywell was hooked up. Took maybe 10 min max since I had to cut a slightly larger hole in the drywall for positioning. You might get lucky depending on what you replace. Make sure you turn off the electric to the existing thermostat as they say, just in case you touch any wires. But just a few words to the wise.

If you need to set it to (I bought used) default, that has 4 times and temps for EACH day. We didn't notice @ 1st but the heat was going from 62-70 during the day. Found out we didn't have it set to hold. Someone is always home, so we prefer manual.

Also, there is a DELAY of 2-5 min if you go from heat to cool or vice versa. I'm using heat right now but called the toll free # just to make sure, and it's hooked up correctly. That's pretty cool 2 that even though I bought it used, they answered my question.

The light at night is the bomb, and the fact you can pop the unit off the wired back to do programming instead of standing there. Very happy I read the reviews and bought this unit. Even the wife likes it and she isn't much on new gadgets.

Customer Review: Poor product description
Summary: 3 Stars

One giant headache. I did everthing the instructions told me to do.
I labeled all the wires - all 8 of them. Got ready to install new Lux
but wiring diagrams didn't match up. Called Lux's Tech. Services for help, but no one there. I left a msg. Called my local air conditoning people -they said that I had a 2 stage heatpump. VERY IMPORTANT - TWO STAGE. Nowhere in the descriptions posted at Amazon does it mention NOT FOR TWO STAGE HEAT PUMPS. Nowhere on the package or instructions did it say NOT FOR TWO STAGE HEAT PUMPS. The Lux people did call back 4 hours later and said I needed the TX9100E. I'm chalking this one up to
experience. I hope this helps others. Do not buy this thermostat if you have a TWO STEP HEAT PUMP. The installation is not cut and dried. Call a heating & air Conditioning business that carries your brand of unit and
ask what type of unit do you have. Also be prepared to contact Lux's
technical support for clarfication of wiring diagrams. Good Luck. (I gave
this a 3 - never got to see it in use but Consumer Reports gives it a
best buy. Conumers Report also does not tell you what you need to buy if you have a one stage heat pump or a two stage heat pump. Also a big
thank you to Jon Jon's review. If you have an AUX Heat function - you have
a two stage heat pump. This was a valuable clue in solving my delemma.

Customer Review: Good, but not great
Summary: 3 Stars

I got the Lux TX9000TS as a replacement for a failed ecoline high end model. I figured since the ecoline failed after two years, why go back to them. After checking with Consumer Reports on-line I found that the Lux was the most highly rated so I bought it.

I guess my biggest disappointment is that I can't keep the back-light on: it's got a timer that turns it off after a set period of time. Since the thing is powered by the furnace, what's the problem leaving the back-light on? I can't imagine that it consumes more than a fraction of a watt. Anyway, that's really only an issue since I have it located in a dark hallway.

My second gripe is that using a touchscreen to control everything forces you to go through a bunch of steps that you would have to go through if you have a few key switches. It's not terrible, just sub optimal. Now having said that, since I programmed the unit, I haven't needed to use it, change settings, or do anything else, for that matter, except press the back-light button to see what the temperature is, so maybe it's not all that bad.

Bottom line: I think if your thermostat is in a brightly lit area then you'll be fine with this one. If, on the other hand, it's in a dark hallway and when you walk by you'd like to be able to glance over at it and read the temperature then you'll be mildly disappointed.
