Customer Review: What's That Little Cylinder Sticking Up on Side of the Base?

OK, my wife just bought one of these and I saw it sitting on the counter with a roll of paper towels on it. A quick glance at the packaging and I grabbed a sheet and whipped it off after the ratcheting noise, and it worked really well. I did another just for fun, and got hooked.
So, I go back into my man cave and a few minutes ago, she calls out to me about where that little thing might be that seems to be missing. I wander back into the kitchen to see what she is talking about, look again at the packaging and, lo and behold, that little thing sticking up from the side of the base is not there, and there is no evidence that it was ever attached.
I've never had one of these counter-top paper towel holders, but we just installed halogen lights under the cabinets and I don't want to start a fire by hanging paper towels underneath one, thus this new gadget.
Is that little bar there to line up with the perforation to help with the tear, or is it there to keep the towels from unraveling. It does not seem to affect the operation, but maybe it would be easier with it. Wondering if I should take it back as defective. Ours is not Kamenstein, but has the same mechanism and looks almost identical so is probably made by the same company. (UPDATE: Ours IS Kamenstein, just has another brand on the packaging)
So far, love it, though I expect the ratchet to fail by Easter. I think it is heavy enough to still be helpful even without the ratcheting feature, though I am sure to miss it when it goes.

No other paper towel holder is better. I never thought I could be so impassioned about a paper towel holder, but this is exceptional.
Replacing paper towels is breeze- you don't have to remove any parts of holder, just slide the paper towel roll on and off. Done!
It looks good- Modern, simple and very aesthetic. No bulky metals or fancy designs to draw attention to your paper towels. Looks sleek and blends in beautifully with any decor.
Really does make a perfect tear- gentle clicking action secures the paper towel roll and helps regulate the speed to which they are pulled. No more reaching for one paper towel and pulling the whole roll! Makes tearing off a sheet with one hand a snap.
Sturdy- very balanced, weighted properly, and won't tip over like many holders will.
You won't know how you lived without this paper towel holder. It's that fantastic. When simple, everyday products that we often take for granted are made WELL, the difference is amazing. I buy these as gifts, and my friends and family always want to know where I got them so they can do the same!
They make an under cabinet and magnetic variation that I'm sure works just as well.

Customer Review: Broke after 3 months - Design flaws

As with many other reviewers, I ordered this item and originally really liked the design and performance. While not exactly stunning in its quality or styling, it worked as advertised and was fairly handsome. For the first three months the ratcheting mechanism worked fine, but one fateful day I tried to grab a sheet of paper towel and the ratcheting mechanism seemed to seize up and something apparently broke internally. Now it's a toss-up at any given time whether the thing will be locked-up and won't spin at all (without fiddling), or will spin freely with no resistance at all. Disappointing. The fact that this has happened to so many others leads me to believe that this is a clear design flaw that needs to be addressed by the manufacturer.
Oh, and one small correction of snapcrackle's review: The paper towel roll CAN be removed from the holder without unscrewing/removing anything. The decorative finial at the top of the roll holder is of a smaller diameter than the towel roll's core so changing/removing rolls is as simple as sliding it on/off the assembled holder.

We've had a wall mounted Kamenstein Perfect Tear paper towel holder which has worked wonderfully almost two years. Like others have reported, the plastic ratcheting mechanism on our paper towel holder recently broke (the plastic spider with 4 spokes had two spokes broken off). I'm not sure if just the broken spider could be replaced, but if so, it would be a relatively easy fix.
I wrote to the Kamenstein folks (Lifetime Brands), and asked if I could get replacement parts for the one that is broken. they want me to send the paper towel holder to them (at my expense), and they will replace it. They said to be sure to include tracking with my shipment to them. They mentioned that replacement can take 4 to 6 weeks.
Our towel holder is in the kitchen by the sink, and gets usage several times a day. After looking at the ratcheting mechanism, I don't see any way that the plastic ratcheting assembly will not break, even with only mild usage.

I had bought a similar item by Kamenstein at my local discount store. It had a lightweight base and tipped if you pulled too hard, but the ratcheting mechanism worked well. It just took 2 hands. So, when I saw this one with the heavy base, I jumped at the chance to try it. I am very pleased with the purchase. It works as advertised and can easily be operated with just one hand. Unlike so many other holders, this one does not have any post or bar except for the center one that holds the cardboard tube, so you can put any size roll of towels on it. Mine came packed very well and in excellent shape. It is so much more attractive than the old plastic type that the contractor had screwed into the bottom of the cupboard. Now, the only problem I see is that the perforations on some brands of paper towels are almost nonexistent. The paper towel holder works great. The only problem I ever encounter is with the quality of the paper towels themselves!
