Tools and Hardware Reviews of MAGLITE SP2209H 2-AA Cell Mini LED Flashlight with Holster, Gray

Customer Review: Very Good Flashlight!
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this light for about four months now, as I got is as an X-Mas present in 07. It's a BIG step up from the non-LED version in terms of brightness and longevity. I'll admit that I am just a bit disappointed in the increase in overall length, but on the whole it's a very good trade off. I usually keep mine in the car, but I've been carrying it for a couple of days in the leather open-ended holster that Mag was selling through Target a year or so back -- and it's a huge improvement over the nylon case that ships with the light. I would also agree with some of the other reviewers here that this is NOT a Sure Fire replacement flashlight -- I have one of those also (a G2), and it does long distance much much better than this one from Mag. But for distances of 25 feet or less, or used in the stand-up candle mode in a bedroom, this is a GREAT light. I'd say it's probably not ideal for the nightstand to be used for the run-to-the-little-boys-room-in-the-middle-of-the-night, because it would seem to be too bright with sleepy eyes. What I would say that it is ideal for is the car, as an emergency light because it's going to be more than adequate for any roadside emergencies, and it should last a long time in that capacity. Don't forget that the AA's can be replaced easily and cheaply in a pinch, where the other lights (ie Sure Fire and Streamlight) need the CR123 batteries -- not easy to come by at the local Circle K or 7-11. For the price (around $20), it's a very good flashlight of excellent quality. I've never had any problems with any of the Mag products I've owned, and I've had a few. If you like what you see here, then it's worth the price of admission to have one - especially if you have the older AA non-LED light and like it, you'll love this one.

Customer Review: I'm disappointed in Maglite. :(
Summary: 2 Stars

I have an old Maglite with a regular bulb that has served me well for years. I decided to try out one of their LED lights to see if it would be a good addition to my flashlights. I decided to go with a small one at first to test it against a traditional AA powered bulb flashlight that I have. I wanted to see how the brightness compared. If it worked well i would get a large one that takes a 3-4 D cell batteries. I got it and also bought a 9 LED $4 no name flashlight in the same order since shipping was free with Amazon prime. I was doing an alarm install on a car and my regular shop light's bulb went out so I got out the new Maglite LED flashlight. It seemed to work fine at first but then it started flickering and I had to shake it and tap it against stuff to get it to stay on. I tried to adjust it by rotating the focus head as you do to turn it on but it still seemed to be flaky. I ended up using the $4 one to finish the alarm install under the dash of my car. Too bad. I thought maybe it was just user error causing the flickering; maybe I was just not sure of how to use the thing so I kept playing with it. It seems like it has some SOS strobe flashing mode or something because i can turn it on and it flashes in a fixed pattern. I can't replicate this all the time. Sometimes it just stays on. I read some reviews saying that the switch was not so good on some of these but then the ratings on the majority of them were rated highly. I figured there must have been a bad batch that ended up getting the few poor reviews but if that was the case, I ended up with one of them. If this thing isn't defective then it sure is hard to figure out. Bottom line, if you have a runner up that you are considering buying instead, going for your second choice may be the way to go.

Customer Review: A whole lot of flashlight
Summary: 5 Stars

I have the 2 cell AA LED Mini Maglite, and I love it. But let's clear up some misconceptions about what this little gem is and isn't. In the dark, this is a bright, capable flashlight that illuminates a wide area. Unlike Maglites you may be used to, the beam can't really be focused. Yes, if you point it towards the ground at your feet, you can see the beam converge. At five yards out, it doesn't really matter, it's an area light no matter what.

If you are looking for a solid area light that doesn't take up a lot of room and has long-lasting battery life - wait no more, this is your flashlight! Go buy it right now.

If you are looking for something to replace a SureFire or StreamLight, keep looking. This flashlight just isn't in the same league of brightness. Yes, it's rough and tough and for a small flashlight it is very bright for close tasks. If you are looking to light up chunks of real estate at night, then you are better off with a SureFire.

A couple of words of warning about this light compared to the "regular" halogen - it is a larger flashlight. In diameter it is the same, but in length it is about one inch longer. And since the LED is supposed to be indestructible, there is no spare in the cap.

I carry this on my belt with the included holster, though I pray to God Maglite wakes up and gives us a holster that LOCKS closed. Would it kill ya to give us six inches of nylon and velcro to hold the blessed thing in place, Maglite?

BOTTOM LINE : A solid, dependable light that is excellent for small areas or enclosed spaces. After all, it is a Maglite. Only six inches of fabric and velcro keeps this from being the best LED flashlight for any amount of money.

Customer Review: Great Power, Very Useful! One minor Complaint
Summary: 4 Stars

I think these LED lights are great. They provide exceptional light, as compared to standard bulbs. I can light up things nearly all the way across an acre of land, and can totally flood closer areas with bright light. It is amazing that such lighting power comes out of such a small unit. I can't imagine needing the larger size for general use around a house or modest-sized property.

Also, the light is very white, not yellow like traditional bulbs. To me, the whiteness of these LED bulbs is much more appealing, and is easier on the eyes.

Mine has been lightly used, so I do not know how well the bulb will peform once it begins to burn out (if it does). But, I will gladly replace the bulb or buy another one of these lights if that ever becomes a problem. They work that well.

The metal housing is tough as nails, and it's small enough to go anywhere.

The only complaint I have is the different light setting that are activated by turning the light on/off repeatedly. For example, if you turn the light on, then off, and back on quickly, it goes to a dimmer setting. Do it again, and it goes to a flashing setting. This can be annoying when you just want some light quickly, but accidentally twist the top when trying to use the unit.

Other than that, I love this LED flashlight, and strongly prefer it over normal bulbed lights of similar size.

Customer Review: Perfect Mini Mag
Summary: 5 Stars

Love the gray color, size and light weight. I think this 2 cell puts out as bright a light as my 3 cell. I presume the batteries in the 3 cell might last a little longer, but it is an awkward size to carry on my belt. Anyway, this little 2 cell LED model is great!

I don't remember the Amazon description saying anything about a selector "switch" that allows you to choose full power beam, reduced (battery saving) beam, steady flashing light, or a flashing SOS (3 shorts, 3 longs, 3 shorts). When I read that on the packaging, I couldn't find a "switch". Just by accident, I found that by turning the light off and back on changes the setting. The reduced beam is plenty bright for most needs and is supposed to extend the battery life significantly. I presume all these 2 cell LED Mini Mags have that feature, but maybe it was just mine. If they all DO have that feature, Amazon should surely say so, because it is a great selling point.

I see some reviewers try to compare Maglites to other brands; but some of the other brands they mention cost triple what I paid for this little Mini Mag gem. In this price range, I don't think you can beat it. Buy several, because they make welcome gifts (just ask my daughter, ha).
