Tools and Hardware Reviews of MAGLITE SP2301H 3-AA Cell Mini LED Flashlight with Holster, BlackCustomer Review: Cheap resistive LED control Summary: 1 Stars
I was comparing this maglite with a cheap chinese 3-AAA, 9-LED flashlight that I bought for $4,50 just to find out that both have comparable light intensity. So I decided to measure the current at different voltages on this Maglite.
I was surprised to find out that this Maglite uses THE CHEAPEST LED control ever possible, i.e. resistors in series with the LEDs. That makes the brightness change a lot when the batteries go low. For instance, I have measured 670 mA at 4,5V going down to only 75 mA at 3V (low battery condition).
Good flashlights or even LED bulbs with electronic control use an inductor at high frequency to keep the current the same on the LEDs even on low battery conditions and they don't burn energy heating the resistors. Actually they draw more amperes from the batteries as the voltage goes down and keep the same current passing through the LEDs at all times.
With that being said, this is the last time I ever pay more for a Maglite. Internally this isn't any better than the cheapest chinese flashlights you can purchase.
Customer Review: Hard to Beat for the Price and the Quality! Summary: 5 Stars
I have 8 or 9 MAG lights around the house, and in the cars...I actually gave my 2AA MAG LED to my Uncle when he needed an upgrade because I already owned the 3AA light I'm reviewing today. I used to keep a 2D or 3D cell MAG in my car, but I just don't feel the need to do that anymore, now that I have this flashlight. Easily as bright as the 2D LED MAG that I own, and equal or better than an older 4D (non-LED) MAG that I keep downstairs. If you need just ONE excellent, all-purpose MAG flashlight to keep in the house, or in the car, I think that this is the ONE. I think that the benefits of easily changing the AA batteries is key to that decision - I have a number of other more expensive (and admittedly higher performance) lights, however those lights need the CR123 batteries. If you don't mind ordering a few spare sets of those $$$ batteries on-line, then some of those lights are worth the money - but if that's a turn off to you, and you want to standardize on AA batteries, then this 3AA light from MAG is really hard to beat!
Customer Review: Best LED Flashlight to exist Summary: 5 Stars
I had Maglites before when they just used that mini krypton bulb, and they were phenomenal back then.
Then out came LED flashlights by other brands. I bought many of them, not having realized yet that Maglite had this flashlight out. All the other brands sadly failed within a month. I tend to be butterfingers at times with my flashlights, and I use them enough that drops are inevitable. All the other brands only took one or two drops from the height of my hands being at my sides and quit working completely. Quite a dissapointment.
However, every Maglite I have owned has, as the saying goes, taken a lickin' and kept on tickin'. I bought this Maglite 3 AA LED flashlight, and it is by far the best of all the LED flashlights that I have owned.
Never again will I buy anything but Maglite if I can at all help it.
Customer Review: Great flashlight, but corroded internally Summary: 2 Stars
I bought one of these awhile back and had the batteries totally corrode, sealing themselves inside. I had both the 3-AA Maglite and a 3-AA Streamlight Twintask, and they both did the same thing. I have numerous other 2-AA flashlights and have never had a problem with them, even for the last 10 years. But with the 3-AA model, the batteries corroded within probably 6 months or so. In fact with both my Maglite and Streamlight, I kept them only indoors, one at work and one at home, one used Energizers, one used Duracells, and yet they both did the same thing. So after spending a bunch of money, I was pretty disappointed, and am hesitant to buy a 3-AA model again. Anyone else out there had a problem with the batteries corroding? I loved this flashlight, but not sure if I should spend the money again.
Customer Review: Disappointed... Summary: 1 Stars
I have always liked MAGLITEs and have never had a problem with them until now. After only a month this flashlight stopped coming on. If I worked with it a little it would eventually come on. A week or so later it would only blink a little and now it almost never comes on. I thought it might be because it's the three cell version but when I bought the 2 cell version it had the same problems after about the same time. I have switched to the Fenix L2D.Fenix L2D 6 Level High Performance Cree LED Flashlight (Black) It works great but it's a lot more expensive. It's brighter, lighter and has more features. So far it has worked perfectly.
