Tools and Hardware Reviews of Mag-Lite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight, Black

Customer Review: Junk Junk Junk
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought two of these; have used each for less than 1 hour of "on" time, and threw both of them out within 3 months of purchase after they became unusable. I keep a light in each car trunk, and due to exposure of heat and cold, eventually a cell will swell up a little (not leak, not fail, just swell). When this happens, you cannot get it out without destroying the light. This is due to too tight a fit between the body and the cell (some cells, even new, fit with difficulty). Since the head cannot be disassembled, there is no way to remove a stuck cell if it cannot be removed from the bottom. So much for a "lifetime" warranty, which excludes damage from cells.

I have a brand x Chinese 3-D LED aluminum flash (with multiple LEDs), which does not have this problem. It has been in a car trunk for over 2 years, with the same set of cells. The head comes off, and there is clearance for the cells. Also, it is 10x brighter, and the bulb(s) are not susceptible to damage like this unit.

This Mag-Lite LED design is a slight update of the original Mag-Lite tungsten 3-D unit, which had the same flaws. C'mon, guys, update your design!!!! Or eventually, the public will get wise, and you will be out of business. I really do want to buy American, but I will not buy any more of these.

Customer Review: Lots of Light, and Incredible Battery LIfe
Summary: 5 Stars

The 3-Watt, 3-Cell LED Maglite is a very cost effective flashlight. No, it is far from the brightest LED flashlight, and it's focus is somewhat less than perfect. That said, it does put out a good amount of very white light, and does so for a ridiculous amount of time. Though I haven't timed the actual battery life, I can tell you that you will still get usable light out of this flashlight more than 24 hours after you turn it on. Why is that a big deal? Well, if you live in an area prone to power outages (I do) this flashlight can be used to light an entire room at least well enough to navigate safely. It beats the heck out of sitting in the dark. When I became aware of the incredible battery life, I began to think about buying several specifically for power outages. With 2, 3, or 4 of these flashlights, placed throughout the occupied area of your house you will have more than adequate light to engage in reading, or even board games as you wait for the power company to restore your A.C. I have to make it clear that the battery longevity, of which I am talking, is based upon using common alkaline batteries, not zinc-carbon ones. I have given a number of these flashlights away to friends, and they have been appreciated very much. I can very comfortably recommend this flashlight to anyone.

Customer Review: Best LED Flashlight for the Price
Summary: 5 Stars

After doing exhaustive research on the web for LED flashlights, I decided to give this one a try. I have owned other LED flashlights and have NOT always been happy with these products. Some reasons why I like this one more than the others include: 1) price, 2) quality, 3) adjustability of the beam (small bright dense center or wider softer light), 4) includes an extra bulb in the base just in case the first one breaks, 5) you can purchase other types of bulbs, like Xenon, separately if you need them, 5) has good battery life (some lose brightness intensity very fast after a few minute of continuous use. Other LED flashlights have smaller multiple light bulbs and you can't adjust the beam intensity as you sometimes need to do on search and rescue missions. Of the 4 LED flashlights I own, this one is my favorite. It works great in a power outage, for hiking/backpacking (only when using out of the car, a little too heavy for a few night loop), and for search a rescue missions. For the price and quality you can't beat this powerhouse flashlight.

I bought 2 and use one for a polyanna gift exchange we do a Christmas with my husband's family this one was stolen the maximum number of times per our rules (3 times) early on in the game.

Customer Review: MAG Instruments still produce quality.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not a flashlight expert.

I wouldn't claim to be quite as bright as any products MAG Instruments can produce, either.

What I wanted was a flashlight that didn't cost $150, took standard batteries that didn't cost half as much as the flashlight, a bright LED bulb, and wouldn't break inherently or other silly things, like switches.

MAG Instruments has been making flashlights that have been helping cops and security for years, doubling as a nice skull-cracker and eye-blinder. It's saved countless motorists, bikers and truckers from nights of dead car batteries and flat tires under the crappiest and cuss-induced conditions imaginable.

It's the proper tool for the job, as far as I'm concerned. You can't beat a classic, that is, unless it's an improved classic with an unbelievably bright LED bulb.

Well done, MAG.

Oh and consider getting the 4D model for this reason: "D" sized batteries get sold in 4's. Makes sense, right?

The 3D model is just easier to pocket and stash in the car without sacrificing too much balance and power capacity, if you ask me. Just some ideas, get the right tool for what you need, obviously.

Customer Review: Why the black hole?
Summary: 2 Stars

Twist this to widest beam, and the center is a huge black hole. As in "can't see much of anything" in the hole. I "inherited" a 2-cell mag and converted it to LED and thought it was pretty cool. So I acquired the 3-cell and felt good. After all, Maglite as a great reputation. Choice of police officers everywhere, especially the 4-cell, which helps subdue criminals. (God bless our police, that last comment is not intended to be a dig or criticism. I'd probably carry a 4-cell if I were a cop.)

Then I discovered other LED flashlights that put out more light than a 3-cell Mag, and no black hole. For example, the Coast 7438 Tactical Focus, at 5 inches long, 5.6 oz., and 3 AAA batteries. Comes with lanyard and nice carry pouch. Even in the pouch, this little light fits in your front pocket without showing a lump. The Coast costs roughly twice as much. Whether it is that much better than the Maglite with 3 D batteries depends on your perception and needs.

I keep my 2-cell Maglite in the kitchen and the 3-cell by the bed. The Coast I keep in my pocket.
