Customer Review: The Best Only Gets Better With MagLite

I purchased my first MagLite flashlight well over 20 years ago. I was so impressed with the quality, I purchased a number of them in different sizes from keychain AAA to 4-D cell. Not surprisingly, I still have them all and most of them still look much the same as they did when purchased. Only one of them has ever been a problem - after a family member left it turned on and in a drawer for over a year. The batteries literally swelled and froze into the aluminum, pitting and eating into it to become a part of it. The rest of the flashlight still looked new. I had to take a large bit and drill the two C batteries out of that one. It took some time to clean it so new batteries would work it again, but it's been back in service now for ten years. I've even seen one of the 4-D cell models run over by numerous 18-wheel trucks with loads just over 80,000 lbs. A friend spotted that one, saw it still worked, and placed it in his truck for his own use. The anodized black finish was worn off, but that flashlight served him for over fifteen years until he passed away. I'm sure one of his family members is still using it.
My original 4-D flashlight quickly became a favorite of mine for shooting raccoons and possums out of the trees on my property during their nightly raids to my chicken coop. The only drawback was the bulb would blow if the flashlght was dropped, and the bulbs only lasted for about five hours use before needing replacement. That meant bulb replacement was about every year or two. Batteries lasted about six months to a year in my use before they needed replacing. Many years ago, I switched from the standard bulb to the Xenon and realized some increased battery life and a stronger beam - even slightly improved bulb life. So, when it was time again for a new bulb, I noticed the LED 3 Watt module offered the brightness of a Halogen bulb and DOUBLES battery life. I also had read LEDs were not subject to blow if the flashlite is dropped, and they have a lifespan far into the thousands of hours.
Since I wanted a second large flashlight and the improved LED performance. I purchased the MagLite 3 Watt LED module and this new MagLite ST4D016. After using this flashlight going on two months, I can safely now say the light remains stronger than a Xenon Halogen after hours of use - and as bright as if the batteries were still brand new. The MagLite ST4D016 4-D LED flashlight is definitely a "keeper" that will please anyone.
*Note* My new ST4D016 also contained the same bulb module I purchased for my older MagLite.
Customer Review: Versatile flashlight has many uses

This is by far the best flashlight I have ever used and I've had and still have many of assorted sizes, styles and shapes. It is also the heaviest flashlight I've ever used and that's not a bad thing. It won't fit in your pocket or lap top case but in a car or next to the bed, it can't be beat. On the other hand, should an invader move into your space, he/she can be beat-en by this hefty source of light. We've used it when the power has gone out, when searching for a diamond ring a neighbor lost when she threw a ball on the grass (we found it) and for seeing what was under a stove, sink and cable box, just to name a few instances where it's been superb. I've purchased rechargeable batteries for this and check them monthly, but also keep a supply of D Cell batteries on hand for times when it needs to be used for long periods. I'm still on the original bulb and enjoy the spare one stored in this housing. Now for additional uses -- I once was preparing a pie crust but could not find my rolling pin. Because I had used the flashlight in the kitchen the day before, I placed a clean plastic bag around the flashlight and while placing the bulb end of the flashlight over the edge of the counter top and not applying pressure near the on off button, used this as a rolling pin. It was amusing at first because the light kept going on and off with the pressure from the switch, but I corrected the pressure and was able to create a usable pie crust.Customer Review: Great Flashlight

This flashlight is great. I have 176 feet distance between my patio door to the back fence. I used it to watch my dogs go poo poo at night. I can see their eyes reflect and I can see their bodies. I also have a shed back there. When I point at it I can clearly see it. I can point it to the left and right side fences without problems. I also use it to ensure that all my my three gates (two side and one back gate) are not opened. I just make sure when I come home from a long trip late at night that neighboring kids didn't coming in or open the gates.
I own the same flashlight but using the normal yellow bulb. I like the white better.
12/12/2009 - Additional comment. The 4D flashlight is heavy. Good weapon in case you need but heavy. In some occasions, I used another door to get the doors to the backyard to do their business and it is outside our fence. I havce to shepperds so holding holding both of them in one hand, flashlight on the other and opening the house door and fence door is really tough. I recently just bought a Stanley LED 5V flashlight from Lowes named Stanley SL5W09 5 Watt LED Spot. It is so light that I can hold it with a few fingers and open doors or hold the dogs on one hand. It has higher voltage so it is super bright. At 176 feet it is better than the 4D LED Maglite.
Customer Review: The archetypical utilitarian flashlight... with a few pluses

I don't care to have flashlights with a bunch of bells and whistles, and this is the kind of flashlight that meets my criteria.
Pros:
Clicky, recessed side mounted switch, it's either on or off... no blinking, spinning, whizzing, flashing, or dimming modes.
Simple "twist to focus" head (which frankly I wouldn't care if it didn't have)
Hefty
LED based (my *favorite* kind of flashlight)
Bright but not blinding (if you are behind it... looking into it is a different story)
Cons:
None that I can see
Other observations:
If you focus it to its tightest beam, the beam is very much like what you would expect from a conventional incandescent bulb. However, if you twist it away from there, it quickly develops a dark disk in the center with a bright halo. I struggle to understand why one would want this, but it doesn't really matter since I just leave it focused as tightly as it can be and it suits me fine.
It's big, but that's partly why I bought it. You'll NEVER lose this down the couch or car seat.
Just a nice, solid, large flashlight.

I purchased several of these as Xmas presents for my fishermen relatives in Sonora Mexico. For the past twenty years I have owned several of the standard four cell Maglites and always gave the wife a pink mini mag for her purse... she loved it. Now with the LED system they are much more desirable. The only problem I experienced in the twenty years was corrosion caused by the batteries bleeding over when the mini mag was allowed to sit for extended period of time with batteries inside(DuraCell) but other than that these have been just awesome all around. When I see the black hole it reminds me they are not perfect but close to it.
They all arrived on time in perfect shape.
I failed to read the instructions on the spare bulb which I thought was a standard bulb which it is not! it is a Krypton bulb?? whatever that means. I returned two of the Maglites for replacement and then I read about the replacement bulb. I kept the replacements and did not return the "wrong bulb" units I payed the standard price and kept them for Xmas presents for a couple friends.
