Tools and Hardware Reviews of MLCS 9146 Forstner 16-Piece Bit Set in Wooden BoxCustomer Review: Definitely a set for the beginner Summary: 2 Stars
I'm a weekend woodworker and would classify myself just above the average woodworker. I bought this set looking to get a good set of Forstner bits that I can also use for later projects. I'll be buying a higher-quality set for anything that requires real attention to detail...
The bits arrived on time, but after opening and inspecting them, they are not of a real high quality. There were obvious metal burrs that had not been filed/ground off. If you've ever done any metal work, it looked like the rough tool right from the making before its sent off for sanding and polish to remove any rough edges. There was also a chip on the cutting edge of the vertical part of one bit. Looked like it had been chipped before they painted it. It shouldn't affect the tools function, but yet another blemish that shows this isn't a professional or real high quality set.
Each of the bits also is a little on the dull side. Now, I was putting in a recessed hole in some MDF, which is kinda hard stuff, and the bits did an alright job of cutting through it, but it took a bit using a 1" bit. Feeling the cutting edge of the bits, they have more of a rough sharpened edge on them. You'll need to sharpen each one for a good cut.
Bottom line: Get this if you need some forstner bits and don't need to worry about the quality of the cut due to the bits coming dull and possibly some burrs on the edges which may or may not affect your work. I lucked out with where the burrs were. And you can obviously file any off. But I'm of the opinion that you should be able to purchase a tool and use it as is -without any touching up.
If you are looking for a more quality set, look elsewhere!
