Customer Review: Pulls, But Quality Poor and Work Yourself to Death

This winch will pull huge logs up a steep hill --but be prepared to work and sweat yourself: and hope you have patience as well as stamina. First of all this Maasdam CAL-3 3 ton winch is an EZ Pull winch CA 3 - something not noted in the description. Further there is no mention in the write-up of the length of the pull... Duh, I presumed it would be 12 feet as were other 3 ton winches, but it is a mere 6 feet. Sooo... Get it all hooked up, crank about 20 times and you will have the slack out of the cables - and you have maybe 5 feet or less remaining to actually move whatever is attached to the hook. Now, work your biceps several hundred times until the hook gets up to the winch and the log, or whatever, has moved maybe 4 feet -- and THEN... well, let the thing slip to get some slack BEFORE you wiggle the release latch using both hands, and finally get the cable to release so you can pull the cable off the spoon back to its short 6 feet, re-ajust your other cable --- and do the whole thing again until you get the log or whatever you are pulling up to where you want.
The hooks have what I presume are safety clips (how these make the operation safer I have no idea), but they are made of cheap soft metal and almost immediately bend. The other little clip that holds the hook to the chain falls off almost immediately and requires a piece of bailing wire to hold it on -- and the cable has to be carefully watched while you crank because it will wind off the spool and get jammed in the side of the roller.
In short, a LONGer reach would at least cut the number of times you have to re-attach, quality hooks would hold up longer and if the take-up spool had a guide that was a bit wider perhaps the cable wouldn't need such careful monitoring. Oh yeah, the levers to release the cable so you can re-extend the cable should work every time - or have a spring to hold them open. I'm going to keep this winch to tighten fences - but now I'm looking for a power winch that runs off DC or AC that will pull 1 ton minimum and can be anchored to a tree: Maybe I just need a football team in-training.
