Customer Review: Maasdam A-20 Rope Puller - Outstanding for guiding trees
Summary: 4 Stars
Based on two+ weeks of hard use and remembering the 1500 pound capacity, the Maasdam A-20 is ideal for guiding trees as they are felled. I'm thinning out fifty foot high pines (with weak root systems) from surrounding hardwoods and the A-20 (plus wedges) is ideal for controlling the direction. I substituted a 100' 1/2-inch rope which gets tied off at 15 to 20 feet high. Felling cuts and wedges do the work while the 1500 pound pull and energy stored in the stretched rope helps guide the falling pine to clear surrounding branches. Several times when the pines hung up, the A-20 pulled the tree clear of the surrounding hardwood branches. The ability to keep taking in the rope as needed is what separates this tool from normal, higher capacity steel-cable "power pullers", limited to a six to ten foot range. Also, a cable puller does not allow you to "stretch" several feet of the pull line to keep some tension even as the tree starts to move. The tool is very well-made and the "automatic" release system works well for releasing tension. Up to 1500 pounds, this is my puller of choice. The only reason I did not rate it at 5 stars is that I have used it for less than three weeks.
