Tools and Hardware Reviews of Magcraft NSN0607 1/2-Inch Rare Earth Cube Magnets, 4-CountCustomer Review: Danger - Beware! Summary: 1 Stars
We recently painted probably half the walls in our office with magnetic paint. We read that neodymium magnets work best with this paint so I purchased 4 styles in varying sizes to see which one we liked before purchasing a large quantity. This particular style was the worst of the four. The magnets are so strong it's almost impossible to get them apart. If you do manage to get them apart the pull is so strong that they will grab each other pinching whatever gets in the way like fingers and skin. When I got the skin of my fingers pinched it hurt a lot! The magnets were so heavy that when we put them on the wall they slid right down (and adhered to the metal heater cover near the baseboard). They do stick to metal file cabinets but again, very difficult to get off. If you have a product that is hard (to say the least!!!) to use, what good is it. When they got near each other and the force of attraction took over the magnets also chipped as apparently this material is very brittle. So the edges are rough and torn on one magnet. This is not a great product and I think it needs more warning about use and some development before it's really something that can be useful.
Customer Review: Fun Summary: 4 Stars
These magnets are fun for goofing around with, but they're really too strong to be of much use. These things are incredibly strong. I was able to move a pair of scissors across my granite counter top by moving this magnet underneath. I was also able to move stuff across my office desktop (1 3/4" thick) by moving the magnet underneath. Pretty cool.
After playing around with the magnets and pair of scissors (bad idea, I know), I discovered that the scissors were polarized. Now my office scissors have a north and a south. Weird.
As others have pointed out, these things are insanely strong and really hurt if you pinch yourself. They're also very brittle and chip easily. That magnetic piece of shrapnel is pretty deadly!
The bad news for me is that I didn't realize how many of the surfaces in my office aren't real metal. I thought I'd be able to use these on my file drawers, but the drawers are fake--only the sides of the cabinets work. Oh well.
I wish I could think of a good use for these. They're a really cool desk toy though. Just keep them away from your wallet and your electronics.
Customer Review: Very strong! Holding a furniture pad to a door! Summary: 5 Stars
I am very impressed with the strength of these little 1/2-inch cube magnets!
Six magnets can hold a heavy 80"x72" furniture blanket/pad (Gleason FP7280 from Lowes) to a double metal door with windows. The blanket has to touch the floor, or else it will try to slide down the side of the smooth metal door. Since 4-6 magnets hold so well, I'm sure 8-12 of these magnets would prevent any sliding.
We needed to temporarily insulate the door and the furniture blanket was the perfect size. I wasn't real sure if these magnets would do the trick so I ordered several packages of them. Four magnets (one package) are almost enough, but six seem very sturdy. They've been holding the blankets in place without any problem for 4 days.
I'm sure I will use these magnets for all kinds of things after we find permanent window coverings for this large door.
Customer Review: Powerful but very brittle Summary: 3 Stars
These magnets are really powerful - it needs considerable effort to separate them from one another. I do not have any particular use for them, I just like magnets and got these to play with. I like square shaped magnets and that is the reason I did not go for Buckyballs. These are fun to play with too, but one needs to be careful - especially fingers as the skin might get caught in between. If you get them too close to your laptop/PC, you run the risk of damaging your HDD. My laptop rebooted once I got it too close to the processor.
In general they are very good and powerful. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because they are very brittle. Within first week half the magnets had some chipping. I wonder if they could enclose the magnet within some kind of resin/rubber to make it less prone to flaking.
Customer Review: Excellent magnets Summary: 5 Stars
I bought these for holding a magnetic knife rack onto a fridge, but also ordered the 1/2" x 1/16" round types which work better because I need 3/8" to come flush with the housing.
We have not had any problem with chipping, no signs of fragility, but they are very strong. Our fifteen year old finds them extremely difficult to separate, the adults just find it hard work. With damp hands I can't remove them from the fridge, and even dry I have to rock them to break the hold.
They come in a double walled tube which is just sufficient to keep them from sticking to everything and messing with any ferrous metalwork they come close to.
Good to play with, but be careful round credit cards, CRT monitors, and anything else that is susceptible to magnetic fields.
