Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 175D Set-Your-Own Combination Lock, Solid Brass

Customer Review: Not your normal 'Master lock quality' avoid!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this lock awhile back at a hardware store as I could not find the original style lock made by Sesamee. It looked the same as my old one, but that's where the likeness stopped. The first lock stopped working after a week of use. I had to cut it off. Took it back and was given a replacement. The next one seemed okay, but stopped working that day. I played with it and discovered it was 1 number off what was set (and was working). Not cool! The lock uses a flimsy change key to set its combo, does not seem that it would last too long if you change combos a lot (or even a little). The feel of the wheels is cheap, they either stick, or rotate too quickly, feel like sloppy workmanship. Would not buy another one of these from Master. I ended up throwing away the 2 I had after finding the original Sesamee lock at Amazon.com Sesamee Keyless Padlocks Sesame Brass/Steel Shackle Padlock. I have an original Sesamee lock thats 20+ years old and working perfect. I now have 2 brand new Sesamee locks in use and they have not failed me. See my Sesamee review, the lock is a bit more money but it won't let you down. This was the first time I was not happy with Master locks. I am not bashing them and own some of their other products and am quite happy with them.

Customer Review: Useful for about 3 years
Summary: 3 Stars

In Hawaii these locks last about 3 years outdoors. The steel casing on the shackle will rust, and any steel components inside also develop surface rust. Without regular lubrication the locks seize up in about 3 years. While we have mild temperatures, it is the moisture that leads to the lock's undoing. WD-40 is a good water-displacing spray to use in the locks on occasion to extend life. I had not used it on one lock and it has finally failed after 3 years. A good spraying annually would probably prevent early lock failure.

The documentation provided by the Master Lock Company does not provide any guidance as to lock maintenance and internal lubrication.

The numbered dials are easy to read for about two years until they tarnish which then renders them difficult to read under low light conditions.

There is a tradeoff of security versus convenience here. With this lock you don't need a key; however, it may take you longer to open the lock. However, there is YouTube presence out there describing how to pick this lock. In my opinion, if your property is along a busy street like mine then I don't see anyone attempting to pick it. However, in an obscured location where the "robber" has time, they can pick it.

The shacks allegedly has a hardened casing which won't stop larger bolt cutters.

Customer Review: Master Lock are very easy to compromise. Not a good locks at all.
Summary: 1 Stars

Check it out on youtube. Search for "Master Lock". You'll see a whole bunch of locks of the "Master Lock" brand, easily compromised, including this 175D one! Some of them a little easier, some of them a little harder. One thing is clear: you just can not trust locks of this brand and that's that. Well, it might be possible that there ARE some version of locks of this brand that are good, but seriously, when you start looking at these videos you'll see that it kind of locks like this whole brand of locks just plain sucks.
I got started of my rant because yesterday I bought a cheaper version of this lock (630D), with 3 digits. It was wrapped in plastic so I couldn't play with it in the store. It only costed $7.
I could open this lock in 20 seconds with no tools whatsoever. I pulled on the lock while rotating the digits. The digits just snapped into place, one by one. It's just too embarrassing to call this a lock, because it's just a plain joke. Cheap Chinese stuff? On the back of the package, it yacks about how it's made in China, but under strict specifications of the Master Lock company. It's ridiculously badly made.
I'm very outraged, because I was going to use it on a school locker and could have lost all kinds of stuff.

Customer Review: Durable, but a seemingly "yesterday" design.
Summary: 4 Stars

A lock is a lock unless you're looking for a super powered lock that is invincible from cutting or hacking. I use this lock to secure a cabinet at work the contains office supplies. The lock is more than durable enough, "looks big & mean," but when it comes to changing the combination, you have to use a supplied key to put it into "set the code" mode.

I prefer locks that allow you to open it with the code & spin it around, push down the shackle to change the combo. This lock requires a separate key as I mentioned.

There are some upsides to having that separate key-- no one who finds the lock unlocked could change the combination and relock it on something causing you to be unable to access what's locked. This would probably be advisable for situations where more than one person have the combination.

In situations where only one person has the combo and you do not plan to leave the lock open & unattended, I prefer the "all in one" style that doesn't require an external key to change the combination.

Customer Review: Knock-off junk
Summary: 1 Stars

This Master padlock is a knock off of the Sesamee keyless padlock. It's a look alike (except the Sesamee doesn't have a hole in the side to let in moisture). Obviously, they're trying to trick people who are looking for the Sesamee. They tricked me, but now I've found Sesamees on Amazon, and I'll never buy another of these.

One of these rusted so badly in less than a year it no longer worked.

On another - the dials tarnished so badly you couldn't tell a "3" from an "8". Also not good.

A third one I had just broke. It looks locked, but regardless of the dial settings - a gentle pull on the lock opens it. This failure mode isn't as bad as other complaints I've seen (lock refuses to open!) but is still annoying.

Spend the few extra dollars and get the original (Sesamee) that Master is trying to trick you into buying with this piece of junk.
