Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 175D Set-Your-Own Combination Lock, Solid Brass

Customer Review: I used to love them
Summary: 2 Stars

Previous review was 5 stars: I've used two of these locks at my beach property for years and they have held up very well. I spray WD-40 in the mechanism once a year or so if the lock gets a little sticky. They have made my life so easy!

Now we're down to 2 stars because the lifetime warranty may prove to be a hassle. We shall see. One of the locks malfunctioned when I changed the combination. I can't get it to open. I emailed the company asking for help and all I got was a generic email. This email asked me to call in for instructions. I called in and spent 10 minutes on hold. I lost my patience and hung up. I don't know why the instructions weren't simply included in that email. I will send in the lock as the several-year-old package instructs and see what happens. I'll post a new review if my opinion of the lock and company changes.

Customer Review: Can't Use It After a Short Time
Summary: 1 Stars

You'll have a real interesting day the first time you try to use this padlock in anything but bright sunshine. The brass background blends into the numbers on the tumblers. Those tumblers used to have ink on them, but not now...it wore off in the first month you used it.

Let's just not buy anything from Master Locks at all. Master Locks is an enemy of America. That means it's an enemy of yours. Its millionaire executives shut down all it U.S. plants and moved them all to China. Why should you pay $11 for a product when the slave who made it was only paid 1/100 of a penny?

There are American-made padlocks, believe it or not. Stop saying that everything is someone else's fault, Google-search it, and buy the American-made padlock instead.

Customer Review: hard to open shackle
Summary: 1 Stars

I just bought this Master Lock 175D brass, set-your-own combination lock. I've always been a fan of Master locks. In my experience with their other locks, they are well-made and sturdy, BUT I can open them with their respective key/combination. However this Master Lock 175D is way too difficult to open. The number dials for the combination do not snap into the individual numbers well, and the dials themselves does not turn easily to begin with. Even when I've gone through the trouble to align my combination just like before, the shackle does not unlock very easily. I wish I could return it, but returning it will cost me half as much as I paid for it to begin with. Not an ideal solution for me, unfortunately.

Customer Review: good product
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought three of these so I can quickly get into my trailer without having to worry about finding my keys. (The kit comes with a key to adjust the combo) out of the package it comes with a default code 0000, insert the key turn it and adjust it to whatever you want. When it's closed, Once you've entered in your code you simply push the top portion of the lock in and voila! it opens. I would have given it 5 stars, however occasionally I noticed it will hang and not open, I will try putting a little lock graphite where they bar inserts into the lock and see if that fixes the issue. It was the same on all three of the locks that I purchased so it could just be like that from the factory.

Customer Review: Good lock, strong and reliable.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this lock despite all of the negative youtube videos showing you how to pick/ hack this lock in a few seconds using a wire/ pick. I think that they are opening the older version of this lock, because on my lock there is too small of a space to place any sort of pick into the combination wheels. Granted you could probably drill a hole in the bottom and or shim the two sides of the shackle, but I think that overall it is a good lock. It has worked reliably for me, also the combination opens without fail each time I dial it in. I don't think that it would take a bullet like the commercials / advertisements show; but an ad is an ad.
