Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 265DCCSEN Dual-Function Security Bar

Customer Review: Here are the features & measurements (minimum and maximum) if you need them..
Summary: 4 Stars

This security bar is very easy to use and a good alternative for providing additional protection. There are questions about how it's installed and its width - this is from the package:

* This security bar adjusts to fit most sliding and hinged doors
* Simple push button adjustment. No tools required.
* High strength steel tube (20-gauge)
* Portable, collapsible to fit most suitcases (**I wouldn't try to bring it inside a carry on**)
* Ideal for home or apartment (entry doors, interior doors for privacy, garage access doors), student dorms and travel
* Limited lifetime guarantee (see your store for details) (**Not sure what it means but keep the receipt**)

For use with hinged doors:
* Non-marring yoke designed to work with most types of door hardware. Can be removed for use with sliding glass doors.
* Pivoting ball joint (assures full contact with the floor)
* Padded foot provides sure grip on most floor surfaces and protects against finish damage.
* For hinged door, adjusts from 30" to 44.5"
* Should not be placed on loose rugs or floor mats
* To install, adjust bar length so padded base is 15-18 inches from bottom of door when yoke end is placed firmly under door knob
* Adjust length by rotating tube until silver button pops up
* Place yoke end tightly against the underside of the knob
* Slide padded base of security bar toward door until snug

For use with sliding glass doors
* Remove non-marrying yoke from end of security bar
* Adjust bar length to fit in the sliding door track
* Allow enough slack to remove the security bar quickly
* For sliding door, adjusts from 27.5" to 42"

For childproofing purposes, a Charley bar is better. If you don't have one, this bar may be better than the typical broomstick but you could consider placing an additional sliding glass door lock on top in case your child figures out how to lift it off the track (not too hard as it's not pressure fitted). In this regard, the Master Lock 251D which had a pressure lever was superior, as it could be wedged firmly high up, out of reach of children.

Customer Review: Beefy, but not much better than wood
Summary: 3 Stars

Our application is a sliding door and not as something you can use to prop the front door shut.

Pro:
-Beefy metal telescoping pipe construction, weighs about 3-4 pounds
-Lots of adjustments in increments of about 1/8" or so to fit pretty well in our door
-Adjustments are quick/easy to make without tools
-Bright white so it's easy to spot from afar as a deterrent
-The wide diameter pipe, about 1.5" also makes it easier to spot from afar
-Name brand you trust

Con:
-My piece of oak worked pretty much the same (although admittedly our oak bar was a tad too short so it was easier to "jimmy" open). No attachment option to the door and jam, works only off pressure... no method to keep in place securely. Our son often loosens or totally defeats the bar without our knowledge because of this.
-Other charley bars often offer a folding design that no only prevents the bar from being knocked loose, but also allow it to fold up like a draw bridge, storing it out of the way (see our review of the "Patio Door Security Bar" that we bought from International Pro Source here on Amazon)

Neutral:
-For us, the pivoting foot and front door security option are nice, but features that we'll never use, thus the neutral rating on this element

Bottom Line: Some mixed pros and cons for our application. Consider all options before making a decision.

Customer Review: maybe good for security on the outside but wont keep the kids inside~
Summary: 2 Stars

I have an autistic son with OCD he is into everything like a monkey. Kitchen counters, drawers, i swear this kid thinks he can fly. You have to watch Autistic kids a whole lot more closely, and i do have a 1 year old. My son recently figured out how to open the front door, i bought those door knob covers, this was a joke, he figured it out in a day, he can unlatch the deadbolt has no fear. He also can unlock the sliding patio door and scale the little metal gate surrounding our patio which leads out to trees rocks and then a PARKING LOT! In a panic i went to target and bought these same master locs~ We came home we installed 1 in the sliding glass door track and put the portacrib by it so he wouldnt notice plus the blinds are there. cant see it. We also put one under the front door handle. Well wouldnt you know he goes to the sliding door sees in only opens about 3 inches or so then stops, pulls back the blinds finds the master lock and takes it right out the track! Oh great! As for the front door he found if he kicks it towards the bottom with his back agaisnt the door it will fall off and voila Freedom! UGH! my son is 2~ he figured this stuff out, im sure its great to keep intruders out but to keep the little ones in, find a different product.

Customer Review: Works on Patio Slider Hung Incorrectly ...
Summary: 5 Stars

Most of the security bars are made for use on sliders that have the sliding panel on inside and stationary panel outside, so it can be wedged between the slider and the outer edge of the door. Just our luck, the doors were hung the wrong way with the stationary panel on the inside, and the slider sliding outside, making it seemingly impossible to use any of these supplementary security devices ...

The one possibility was to wedge the bar between the stationary panel and the handle of the sliding panel. Unfortunately, at that angle the handle makes an odd curved shape that does not allow a simple bar to work this way without sliding around. To our delight, the pivot joint with the large rubber foot on this Master Lock 265D - probably designed for the swinging door application to work - makes this bar work for our sliders! as long as the large bell-shaped pivot foot is placed against the handle of the door.

Other than that, I'll mention that the bar does look kind of clunky as ours has to be in the center of the door where the handle is, but it is worth the extra peace of mind knowing we are not just relying on our burglar alarm to deter someone from trying to enter our house.

Customer Review: It's "alright"...
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been having problems with neighbors lately in our apartment building, and since we share a balcony we've had issues with them crossing over onto our side, and their kids have made multiple attempts to see and enter our apartment. The parents encourage this, and have also come over in an attempt to peer in.

So, my answer was to get this security bar. It's basic, and good enough. Nothing special, honestly. I knew it was trouble when the package arrived with the box being much bigger than the product, and I heard it rattling around. It's metal, so no real need for padding, but a more properly sized box would've been nice. There wasn't even a copy of the shipping invoice in it, and the tape on the top was mostly ripped/cut.

The product itself is fine. The length is a little short. If someone were able to force the door open, a smaller person would be able to squeeze through. I don't see any exact length information listed in the product description, and based the length off of the example image against the door. It's perfect for a door, but can be short for a large sliding glass door.

I think it'll be good enough. Better than nothing!
