Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 265DCCSEN Dual-Function Security BarCustomer Review: Every little bit of security helps Summary: 5 Stars
We don't live in a crime-ridden area, but with the economy tanking and monitored security systems being so expensive, we're doing a few things on our own to better protect our property.
This security bar is easy to use and definitely gives peace of mind. It comes ready to go; you just extend it so the base is about 16 inches from the door with the top bit snug under the doorknob, and lock the bar at that length. Using it is easy too, just set it under the doorknob and kick the base towards the door to secure it. A sideways kick releases it. We're using it on an uncarpeted area.
I wouldn't use this item on a patio door as it's too easy to defeat simply by removing the door, something thieves are good at.
My only complaint with this item is with Amazon, not the item itself. It was delivered in a huge box stuffed with an astounding amount of paper. The waste appalled us. Is it too much to ask that Amazon be more environmentally friendly when packaging items, and find appropriately sized boxes rather than just grabbing the first box that will contain an item?
Customer Review: Decent Cheap Door Security Summary: 4 Stars
With all the hype about bump keys (which basically renders most locks useless), I tried to think of something that can counter it. So far, this is the only thing that I can find short of buying a top of the line lock for a $80 - $200.
[Pro]
It's moderately effective with a low price.
It's lightweight and portable. You can bring it on trips.
It's versatile (it's adjustable and can be used on any door that swings inward and sliding doors)
This will slow down potential intruders, potentially either buying you precious extra time or alerting you.
You can use it as a makeshift bat if needed.
It has better quality than similar competitors.
[Cons]
It only slows down a potential intruder. It won't stop them. This device is common enough for them to think of ways of countering it.
The top piece that hooks into the door knob is made of cheap plastic. It will eventually break. Check it often.
Customer Review: It Does What I Need Summary: 4 Stars
I gave this four stars instead of five, because although it does what I need, it's not perfect. It is certainly not a substitute for a triple-bolted steel door. And I agree with another reviewer that if someone really, really wants to get in, they will.
Both my doors are of heavy construction and dead-bolted. I wanted a second line of defense in case the would-be intruder defeated the dead bolt. This unit does it. What I'm hoping for is, now faced with another line of defense, the guy will just go away, since he has no way of knowing if there's also a third line.
Can this unit be broken by brute force? Probably so - I don't know. But I do know that in the process, he's going to have to make an awful lot of noise.
In short, this unit isn't a total solution in and of itself. But's an inexpensive additional line of defense. After I tested my first unit, I immediately ordered a second one for the other door.
Customer Review: Needs improvement Summary: 4 Stars
Reading the reviews of this product before I purchased it, I expected to do some modification to the item before deploying it in my home. The adjustable peg that keeps the inner telescoping bar extended is the most vulnerable part of the bar. It slides in and out easily, and as others have said previously, can simply fall out of it's mount inside the bar, rendering the device completely useless. So, after adjusting the bar to the proper height, I drilled two holes through the bar and bolted the inner tube in place. Now, even if the original peg fails, there are two bolts to take the shear stress. Also, the bushing on the inner tube (to keep it from wobbling) is only loosely press fitted. I applied adhesive and reinserted it, now it remains in place firmly. With these changes, I attempted to break down my front door without success. In fact, the door frame started to buckle, and the bar didn't show any signs of fatigue.
Customer Review: does the job, feel safer Summary: 5 Stars
This item is very well-made and does the job. We bought this for my daughter's NYC apartment. She already has two locks, but the Super has one key, and who knows what else could happen, so we wanted her to be more secure. This item would prevent anyone from pushing in the door. My husband tried to open the door with this in place and he could not. It is very easy to adjust to fit, and that has to be done only the first time. After that, my daughter just easily puts it against the doorknob and it is all set. She has wood floors and the rubber grip holds very well against the wood. I liked that we could also use it as a horizontal security bar, since she has a narrow hallway (the width of the doorway) in the entry, she had the option to use it horizontally, but it works well as intended, against the doorknob, at a 45 degree angle. Easy to store when not in use (ie: when she is not there). I definitely recommend this product.
