Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 5400D Select Access Key Storage Box with Set-Your-Own Combination Lock, 1-PackCustomer Review: I have had TWO of these fail on me!!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
We invest in real estate and use lock boxes all of the time. This looked like a good buy. It even worked real well for a while.
Then one day it just would not open for my property manager (PM). She tried like crazy to get it open, then it finally popped open. After that it would open for ANY combination. One down...
Now I'm trying to sell my house so I put another one of these on my own house. I used this box every day to gain access to my house as it was MY key in the box. Well this one died too. I had a termite inspector coming to the house that day and he was not able to get in either. I had to climb through a window to gain entry to my house. I then removed the door knob so I could take this thing to my work bench where I was able to break into it.
That is another bad point about this lock. I hit it no more than 20 times hard with a normal hammer on the hinge at the bottom and it just opened right up.
So all around this thing is just a hunk of junk. I would avoid it.
Customer Review: good but can be compromised Summary: 5 Stars
i bought it to secure spare keys: vehicle and house keys, i only use it on trips or vacations, i secure it underneath my family van, where you have to be basically looking from underneath the car to see where it is at, i keep it there so that i can have access to spare keys on my trip/vacation gets hectic and loosing keys or something can happen, i have busted one open before by way of a very heavy hammer it will damage this lock, but also keep in mind i had it on a concrete cement hammering on it to open it, it will deter most, since you will not have anything behind it as it wont be on cement and a person cant get the same type leverage swinging at it from underneath the van, buy 1, and dont forget to take it off when you go to a mechanic or who has to go underneath your car, this way they dont find out your address and go steal your car during the night. fits up to 5 keys easily, easy to reset code, get it here on amazon much cheeper than home depot or lowes thats for sure
Customer Review: Good for my use Summary: 4 Stars
I need this lock storage for my alert for if I fall or have health problems, or if I go away and need to have my cat sitter get in. My apartment complex will not let you make duplicate keys, so it was the only solution, especially for my Alert One. The only problem I have -- or suggestion -- is I have no way to attach it to my door handle as it is the handicapped style that is long and slim, so it can only be slid on and off. Of course, someone would have to get through 2 security doors to even get to my door, so I don't have any fear of someone taking off with it to pry open and get in my apartment. It would be a problem if I were to use it on my house I just moved from, as it did have the handicapped handle also, and then I would worry that someone could take it, break it, and come back again. But for my current pupose, it is perfect, and so far I have not had any difficulties with it opening.
Customer Review: Not very secure. Summary: 1 Stars
When we moved into the house we live in, one of these were attached to the back door, by a previous owner. I was tempted to cut it off as we didnot know the combination. One day I decided to see if I could get it off in a nondestructive manor. My first attempt was by disassembling the door knob. This only got it off the door. I fiddled with it for about an hour until I couldn't believe my eyes! It opened! Using nothing but simple everyday household items, I was able to discover the combination. After doing it a few times, I could do it in less than two minutes.
If I can do it, I'm fairly certain anybody could do it. Beware that these things are not very secure. I laughed when I read about the lengths that others went through to "crack" theirs open.
For those curious, the combination was 5408. Currently it is 0000 sitting in our living room as a conversation peice.
Customer Review: Master #5400D Key Storage Box Summary: 5 Stars
This is the coolest thing. I have been looking for some way to store a key outside safely for a very long time. (I don't intend to hang it from the door handle.) The box itself is very strong and far superior to the push button type made by GE and others. The appearance of it in the photo is deceiving. It does not show the cover nor does it does not give the impression of how strong and well made it is. One other nice feature is the case has a plastic/rubber coating which makes it not only gentle against surfaces but easy to grip in nasty weather. For example if it was snowing outside and the temperature freezing or all wet, you could grip this without gloves. It's really a nice thing to have. I am going to get another and hook it to something under my car. I hate it when I lose a car key... Amazon has by far the best price and the reviews were extremely helpful helping me choose this item.
