Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 5400D Select Access Key Storage Box with Set-Your-Own Combination Lock, 1-Pack

Customer Review: Very Secure...it doesn't open
Summary: 2 Stars

We hired a caregiver for my dad and didn't want to just give them a key. Bought this because of the high amount of positive ratings. The storage box is VERY durable and strong. It was easy to set the combination. I tried it several times, it worked great. Then we put the key in,closed the door and tried the combination, but the box wouldn't open. We removed the key chain from the key, thinking maybe it was taking up room (it wasn't a big chain) and just put the key in. It wouldn't open. This was a normal sized house door key, not some jumbo key and there was only one (the description says it will hold 5 keys). The lever to open the door would move, indicating that the right combination was used, but the door wouldn't open. Can't take a chance of having the caregiver standing outside the locked door trying to get in...this is being returned.

Customer Review: Awesome when it works
Summary: 3 Stars

We've had this product for 2 years. It's hanging on our front porch furniture (so outdoors, but in a covered area), and has come in handy a number of times when we have lost our keys, or we want friends and other people to However, I went to use it today and it has become VERY difficult to use. The little switch is nearly impossible to flip open with a finger (I was able to wedge it open with a key) and the little "door" was difficult to shut when I was finished using the lock box. I had to put it on a flat surface and use my body weight to get it to shut. I noticed that some of the metal is rusty. Ultimately, I think I'm going to get a new one because it has been so handy. However, if I need a need another new one in 2 years, I'm probably going to try to find a new way to hide a key.

Customer Review: Good when it works - disastrous when it is defective
Summary: 1 Stars

It's definitely nice to have when it works. I won't repeat the advantages of this lockbox in my review since they are listed elsewhere. When one got used relying on it and it doesn't work all of a sudden, then the consequences can be really bad. This is what happened to me. I came home the other day and tried to get to my key. Well, the lockbox wouldn't open. I know my combination is correct, no doubt. It's easy to remember and I'm good with numbers. But the lockbox refused to open. Just picture yourself by your frontdoor trying to open your own door. Unfortunately there is no after-sale service in this case for this item. I could return it but why would I? My key is still inside and the thing costs $20. Just not worth it. Thanks a lot to the manufacturer for all the trouble they caused me.

Customer Review: Froze up. Useless.
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this for my oceanside vacation rental last October. I placed it on a protected patio area and placed the key in it. It worked fine until last week when a guest absolutely could not get the key out. I sent my handyman over, who knew the combination. He tried it. Didn't work. Tried it again. Didn't work. Sprayed WD-40 on it. Didn't work. He never got the key out of there. Fortunately, I had a back up lock box that did work. My back up lockbox was a cheapo that had been sitting out in the tropical rain for 18 months. That had to be sprayed with WD-40, too, but it opened. I have no idea what went wrong but my guess based on previous reviews is the following: 1) it rusted, or 2) it was inadvertently reset.

Customer Review: Perfect for surfers or swimmer's car keys.
Summary: 4 Stars

I use this when I go surfing to put hide my keys.

My "smartkey" from a 2008 prius isn't waterproof like my old Ford keys and the key fits into this storage box perfectly.

Then I attach it to a hook under the rear fender of the car (this exists on many cars) and lock it up while I catch some waves.

Much better alternative than other people who try and hide their keys in various places in or around their vehicle.

Can set your own combination.

Has a removable latch and can also fit on door pulls.

Seems water resistant but I've never used it in the rain.

Would strongly recommend.
