Customer Review: A PLEASANT SURPRISE
Summary: 5 Stars

MASTERLOCK 5401D

PROS;
-ONE HAND OPERATION
-STRONGER THAN I EXPECTED.
-EASIER TO USE THAN I EXPECTED.
-VERY EASY TO INSTALL.
-EASY TO RESET YOUR PASSCODE ANYTIME YOU WANT.
-IMPENETRABLE (REALLY!!! YOU'D NEED A CROWBAR AND DYNAMITE).
-INEXPENSIVE.
-BETTER DESIGN THAN THE OTHER KEY SAFES WHOSE ENTIRE FRONT COMES OFF. THIS DESIGN IS HINGED AT BOTTOM AND OPENS SIMILAR TO A STORAGE BIN.
-NEAT SLIDING COVER THAT HIDES THE COMBO WHEELS (UNSEEN IN THE ADS). IT CAN ALSO SCRAMBLE THE CODE WHEN YOU CLOSE IT, IF YOU PUSH ON IT.
-HOLD 4-6 KEYS.

2 CONs;
-DIFFICULT TO SEE DIGITS IN THE DARK. (TIP... INSTALL IT AT EYE LEVEL)
-IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO CRAM SEVERAL KEYS IN AND CLOSE

This is a no brainer. It is hands down the best bang for the buck in exterior key safes. I read the reviews too, then went with this one, Glad I did. YOU WILL BE TOO.

Customer Review: Just what I needed
Summary: 5 Stars

This item is exactly what I was looking for. It is small and compact but can hold a lot of keys. I have a vacation rental that has a code to open the door. However if the code fails or the batteries go dead (sometimes due to extremely cold weather) the door will not open unless you have a back up key. Well, being 2 hours from the rental, this can pose a big problem if my renters cannot get in. This makes it so convienient for both of us. Now if the code on the main door fails, they can call me for the back up code on this master lock and use a key to open the property. Mounting was simple. I placed it in the door jam area (between the main door and the storm door (since the storm door is never locked)) This way it is protected from the elements. If anyone puts a bad review out there about this item, it must be because it was not exactly what they wanted or it was user error. It truely doesn't get any easier than this!!!

Customer Review: best solution for combination lock box
Summary: 5 Stars

This is rock solid when all the screws are installed into a hard immovable surface. The bottom screw is a little hard to drive in b/c of the door getting in the way of your drill or screw driver. It is easy to set a combination. The dials turn easily. The sliding door is a nice feature.

I would try to put this in an inconspicuous location that is at least somewhat protected from the elements. But not so secluded that someone could hammer away at it without being noticed. I don't feel this device is easily or quickly defeated. That said with enough time or a heavy enough tool it could be broken into.

I do worry that if you keep 5 keys in it, as the packaging touts it will accommodate, that the door could get jammed and not open. Therefore i keep no more than 1 or 2 keys in it, and hang them up on the top screw that is not driven all the way in - as someone else suggested.

Customer Review: Best Solution on the Market
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a rural vineyard and keep my tractor and other equipment in the barn. I keep the key to the "man door" in this very solid box which allows access to anyone who knows the combination. This means my suppliers and my crew can get in the barn without needing a key, but it certainly will deter the random vandal/partying teenagers from breaking into the barn - keeping the property safe and the kids away from the equipment. It is far superior in construction, security and usability to those easily cracked "push-button" key holders. Far more solid than using just a combination padlock on the otherwise unlocked door.

This is the best solution I could find for allowing access to several people who don't have keys while keeping unwanted people out. I mounted it discretely on the back of a post protected from the weather and hasn't shown any signs of age.

Customer Review: Open and change the combination
Summary: 4 Stars

Once screwed on the wall this is secured. With long enough screws the wall would have to be tore down to get it off. I bought two of these. One for home and one for a rental complex. When I'm away from the rental location people call me that they're locked out. It's 19 miles round trip. I got this and have installed it with the master key locked inside of it. Problem is that when I give someone the combination to open it then they can change the combination and I won't be able to get it open. Hope they never do that. It's also easy enough to change the combination each time I give the numbers to someone so it will be secure again. Wish it required some tool to change combo like my other hanging combo locks. It will be perfect for home use if it's just for locked out owner or family or trusted other person that won't change the combo on you when they get it open.
