Tools and Hardware Reviews of Matrix Silver Stainless Steel Folding KnifeCustomer Review: Crocodile Dundee: "You call that a knife? Now, this here is a KNIFE!" Summary: 5 Stars
For my review, I think it might be helpful to others that I share a little about my background as a knife enthusiast and collector by saying that without pulling out all of the various boxes that I keep my "stash" of knives in and doing an exact count, conservatively, I own over 100 knives. While I do own some fixed blade knives, I would estimate that over 80% of what I own are folders. When I call myself a "collector", I don't mean that I am the type of knife / blade enthusiast/collector that indulges in spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a single knife.
The most I've ever spent for a single knife is $[...], and usually, anything over $[...] is the exception. Of the knives from established "brand" manufacturers and/or designers (ie, such as Gil Hibben, Linville Knife & Tool, Boker, Benchmade, Buck, Cold Steel, SOG, Smith & Wesson, Spyderco, etc, etc.) that I've bought, many of those can easily go for way over my usual budget limit of $[...] per knife.
Quite frankly, my preference is to spend no more than $[...] per blade. Usually, when I find/see a specific brand model / style that catches my eye, I'm very patient and take my time browsing and shopping through many websites and wait until I find a source/website that has what I want at a great sale price before I buy it.
However, in addition to adding to my collection from the many different online / web sources, luckily for me - I live in the Los Angeles / Southern California area. For those of you who are not familiar with this region - in the area directly south of downtown Los Angeles proper (where all of the high-rise office towers are that contain the white-collar, professions such as the big accounting, consulting, and law firms) - there are various industrial, "wholesale" districts.
There is the wholesale grocery/produce district, the wholesale flower district, the wholesale garment & textile districts, etc, etc. While there are those specifically "defined" areas that cater to those specific industries, what's really neat is that sandwiched in-between the produce/grocery/flower/garment/textile districts are literally thousands of small "Mom & Pop" merchants - that import literally anything and everything that you can possibly imagine - such as mini-pocket cycles / scooters, water pipes & bongs, cellphone accessories, leather goods, and yes....**KNIVES GALORE**!!! Of course, practically 100% of these knives are the current standard of the world - ie, "Made in China". And incidentally, this particular KNIFE that I'm reviewing, is of course - MADE IN CHINA!
The vast majority of the knives that I've purchased from these small shops have been in the range of $4 or $5 apiece to no more than $7 or $8. Of the 100+ knives that I own, probably 25% to 30% were bought via online / web sites, which means the majority (70% to 75%) are those that I bought from these local LA street merchants.
Keep in mind - these are the shops/sources that usually "wholesale" their stock to retailers nationwide.
If you live anywhere else in the US - I'm guessing that if you have a local knife shop - they probably buy their stock from these LA area importers by the dozens or hundreds. Each of the knives that they buy in bulk for say $2, $3, or $4 each - they then mark up to retail prices to their local customers in the range of $15 to $25 per each individual knife.
I give that long explanation above just to illustrate that the $[...] bucks (ok, $[...], to be exact!) that this **INTIMIDATING BEAST** goes for from Amazon is a **HECK** of a **GREAT DEAL**!!!
As another reviewer mentioned - when open, this puppy measures 9.5 inches. The vast majority of my folding knives measures in the range of 7.5 to 8.0 inches when open. So yeah...this is definitely one **BIG INTIMIDATING MO-FO** of a knife!
I like it so much and it's so cheap / reasonable, I'm thinking of ordering another 3 or 4 just to have some back-ups in case I ever lose it, or whatever! It's important to note that despite how "cheap" or reasonable or affordable that the price of this particular knife is - there is absolutely nothing wrong with it in terms of the QUALITY of the knife. Like 99% of the knives "Made in China", the blade material is a standard 440 grade stainless steel. In summary, while it is "cheap" in terms of price, it is not by any means "cheaply made." On the contrary, it is a very solidly constructed knife that also looks extremely COOL!
Look, if you're looking for some kind of fancier, more "exotic" blade material, such as CPM S30V, then you've got to be prepared to shell out a whole lot more $$MOO-LAH$$ than $[...] bucks!
One other note is that I have fairly large hands. As mentioned previously, the vast majority of folding knives that I own are in the range of 7.5 to 8.0 inches long when fully open. This **BEAST** is 9.5 inches long! Up until I opened this knife and grasped it FIRMLY, I did not realize HOW much **BETTER** a **BIG** folder handle with that extra 1.5 inches feels in my hand!!! Yeah, sad to say.....SIZE does MATTER..... ha ha ha! So, for you other guys with BIG hands, this is definitely the folder for you!
If I knew that I was going to be walking through the most dangerous, crime-ridden, gang-banger, druggie infested neighborhood and there was only 1 knife that I was allowed to carry for self-defense, my first choice would be my semi-custom $170 "raptor claw" from [...]. Now that I've gotten this **BIG BAD BOY** - I would have to say that it would definitely be an extremely close second.
