Tools and Hardware Reviews of Maxxima MLN-09 LED Night Light With SensorCustomer Review: Starts off bright then becomes uselessly dim. Summary: 2 Stars
This LED night light started off working great. It was bright and had a color temperature that compliments natural moon light. I was so impressed that a purchased 2 more. However after about six months I've noticed that the light in the bathroom which ran practically 24/7 was now too dim too be useful, so that night light was thrown away. Then another one simply died for no reason, 2 down. The one I had in the kitchen didn't run as much, but after about a year after installation it too lost most of its brightness and had to be moved to less critical area where it is now simply a decoration.
At a cost of 11 cents per KWH for the cost of this $5.00 night light, I could have run a regular 5 Watt incandescent night light for 9,000 hours. I estimate that Maxxima white LED night lights only last about 4500 hours. The LED night light costs about twice as much to operate as the old regular night lights and only puts out a fraction of the light. (I've got a bunch of surplus white/clear C7 christmas tree bulbs, so in my case the cost of the bulbs are not included in operating costs)
The problem with low life span of the LED is a common one with white LEDs. The LED could be overdriven or is of low quality. Maxxima makes a model of this nightlight with a yellow LED which could possibly meet the stated lifespan, but the light will be monochromatic.
Customer Review: I love these, but hated the excess packaging. Summary: 4 Stars
We've had two of these in our home now for almost a month. One is plugged in above my vanity in the master bathroom at the back of the house and one is plugged in the foyer at the front of the house. This is all we need to see our way to the bathroom at night or the way to the office (front of the house) early in the morning.
I had a three-fold reason for purchasing these. 1) We're cheap and try not to turn on lights if we can possibly avoid it. These purport to cost only $.25/year in electricity. 2) We're getting up there in years and I was afraid that we'd stumble on something unexpected in our path. These shine so brightly that my husband closes the bathroom door partially so the light doesn't shine into the bedroom. 3) We want to help the environment.
I got everything I wanted for reasons 1 and 2, and the lights were delivered in perfect condition ... due to being packaged in hard plastic, boxed in styrofoam peanuts. 2 out of 3 isn't bad, though, and we should never have to buy anything like this again. Right? <-- I guess that will be determined through the years.
Customer Review: Auto on/off sensor doesn't work Summary: 2 Stars
I bought two of these MLN-09 Night lights and neither one turns off during the daytime or when lights in the room are turned on. I've tried them all over the house and none of the lights in any of the rooms are bright enough to trigger the night light to turn off. The only way I found to trigger them to turn off is to shine a flash light directly into the sensor. So, if you don't mind that they run all day then they are OK. I was considering returning these two night lights, but I figure the return shipping cost would negate the value I get back from a refund.
Note: I also bought two MLN-11 2-LED bright night lights which are also from Maxxima. Those lights actually turn off during the day as I would expect. So, those I would recommened the MLN-11 instead.
Customer Review: Bright, durable Summary: 5 Stars
These night lights have 2 main features:
- LED lights are sufficiently bright while consuming very little energy.
- Photo-sensitive switch turns them off during the day or even when you turn on the 'big' lights at night, ensuring that they are not annoying.
I've had one of these for about 2 years now as a freebie from my company's Earth Day giveaway and I've been pleased enough with it to order one extra pair recently.
Regarding durability. The brand-new lights appear to be about 30% brighter than the 2 year old one and the old one is still bright enough. That would lead me to conclude that a lifespan of 'several years' should be expected, unless you are receiving a defective unit.
Customer Review: Nice, Nice Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fine night light. We bought two styles and they are both pleasing to the eyes and efficient at what they are supposed to do. This one in particular I think it is a little more efficient at providing the right kind of night light but the shape of the other one is pretty cool (rounded, looks like a bubble of some kind made by the same company and priced the same). As of late we are going through a phase and we been purchasing these lights (they were our first ones) and now we are totally on the ones that provide colors instead of plain white. Our house is starting to look a little on the festive side at night and that is not a bad thing, I think. 4 solid Stars for the Maxxima MLN-09 LED Night Light.
