Tools and Hardware Reviews of Melnor 3015 6-Cycle Electronic AquaTimer Digital Hose TimerCustomer Review: New vs. old timers Summary: 1 Stars
I thought I was buying the older, round style, Melnor timer, as that model was pictured in the Amazon ad. The round timer could be set in the dark, as it had a different colored, flashing light, for each timer selection (ie: start time, present time, duration, frequency), etc. The new style, pictured here, was shipped instead (two), & I returned them both, unopened. I had previously purchased one of the new ones at Home Depot, as I could not find the old round style. The new ones were harder for me to set. The readout only stays on a short time. There is no lighting, & the readout cannot be seen at night without an external light, making them a hassle to set at night, especially since they require more manipulation to set. The manual start button seemed to require a double click once or twice, if you just want to do an immediate, manual 30 minute watering, and the unit is big & bulky, & cannot be easily attatched with other timers on a manifold, which is what I use for a large garden, orchard & yard (I have 5 timers on 3 faucets).
The problem I had with the old, round style, was 2 or 3 that I have owned over the years stopped being accurate, allowing the water to run longer than set, or not being able to be set at all. Perhaps that is why they are not available anymore. Two were replaced by the factory when I returned them, but the third was returned, still not working, and with no written explaination as to diagnosis, etc.
Melnor should redesign one with a lighted readout, a countdown timer, a smaller size & a more user-friendly setting configuration. I won't buy any more until they do, & will look at other brands, when I need to replace what I now have.
Description of Melnor 3015 6-Cycle Electronic AquaTimer Digital Hose TimerA great tool for the resource-wise, Melnor's three-cycle electronic timer regulates watering so that your time, money, and water are better spent. Designed for use with low-pressure drip or soaker hoses, the timer offers hourly settings (once every 8, 12, or 24 hours) or daily settings (once every two, three, or seven days). Programming on the tool is simple--a combination of lighted prompts and a dial with tangible clicks. The unit runs on a 9-volt battery that lasts a full watering season with average use. A gentle shutoff mechanism keeps pipes from banging, while a battery-indicator triggers a flashing light when power's low. Ideal for daily use, the timer's also great for keeping the garden green while you travel. --Emily Bedard
