Tools and Hardware Reviews of Mighty Mule FM145 Bulldog Pedestrian Gate LockCustomer Review: Great lock but one defect... Summary: 4 Stars
I received and installed the lock a couple of weeks ago. It installed easily and it works well. There are a couple of problems though, and I hope this gets back to the manufacturer.
Minor problem: The keypad doesn't have any space behind it in the case, so that if you need to bring the wires in low on the keypad, you will have trouble routing them around the battery clips to the connections at the top. Their recommended hole is near the top, but the way I mounted it, I couldn't go through the fence at that point. They should leave some more room on the inside to give you flexibility.
Major problem: The bold in the lock has a curved surface to allow it to click over the Clevis Pin on the Lock Receiver when you shut the gate. The problem arises because they not only made the outer surface curved, they also curved the inner surface of the bolt along with it. The result is that if the gate is pushed in slightly so that the bolt is in contact with the Clevis Pin, it forms a slight hook, and when you energize the bolt, it jams on the Clevis Pin and will not retract. You have to jiggle the gate and then try again.
It's not a deal breaker. I called the company and spoke to a fairly knowledgeable fellow and we concluded my problem is based on the fact that our big redwood gate has a lot of inertia and binds the bolt when it's pushed in slightly. However, he agreed that it was a bad idea to curve the back surface of that bold and said he would pass it along to the product designers.
We really love the convenience. We have this on our driveway redwood gate, where previously we just had a hasp and padlock on the outside. If it was locked and you were on the inside, you had to go all the way around back through the house and out the front and use two hands to open the padlock. Even if you were on the outside, it was a big hassle if you were carrying bags to take directly to the back yard. Now, I just push the buttons and I'm in!
