Tools and Hardware Reviews of Mighty Mule FM502 Automatic Gate Opener for Heavy Duty Dual Swing GatesCustomer Review: Another dead Mighty Mule 502 Summary: 1 Stars
I've had my MM502 for exactly two years now. Like so many of the other posts, I experienced problems with the control arms shortly before the 18 month warranty period ended. After waiting on the phone for nearly 30 minutes in the sun by the gate, a technician finally picked up and quickly ran me through some diagnostics. Sure enough, the master control arm was dead, so the tech instructed me to mail the arm to them for repair. Though I had to pay around $35 for shipping, I was very happy that I squeaked into the warranty period and did not have to pay for a new control arm.
A new arm was sent to me rather quickly, but I had a strange feeling that the slave arm wasn't too far from dying. It was making some really loud noises (the system makes quite a disturbing amount of noise when it is brand new, but this was a little excessive), and I feared that I would be going throught the same nut-roll with this other arm.
Two days ago, the slave arm finally died. When I looked through my paperwork to find the tech support number, I came across my receipt which indicated that I had owned it nearly two years to the date. I knew that it was out of warranty, nevertheless, I called the tech support to confirm that the slave arm was indeed dead. The fellow did not hesitate to try to sell me a new one for $300, but I was a bit upset and decided that I'd try to fix it myself. After all, it can't be rocket science.
After de-gutting the arm, I found that the gears in the gearbox were stripped. The holes in the housing upon which the gear pins rode where all wallowed out. This caused the gears to separate enough so that they started to slip on each other and severely wear. I've spent the last two days trying to locate a gearbox in order to avoid paying $300 for a new arm, but I can not find one anywhere! You can buy nearly any part to fix the arm except the gearbox. I find it a bit ironic that this particular opener is advertised as being heavy duty, but the components are made so cheaply. I am very disappointed with this gate opener and will never buy a Mighty Mule/GTO product again. Now that I've read all of the other comments which essentially echo the same problems I'm having, I'm not sure that I want to fix the control arm only to go through this all over again in one more year!
