Tools and Hardware Reviews of Moen 104421 Cartridge Puller, For 1200, 1222 & 1225 Single Handle Cartridges

Customer Review: Stuck in Florida
Summary: 1 Stars

I received a complimentary replacement cartridge from Moen to correct a small shower head drip. I followed the disassembly instructions to the letter. Upon using the plastic twist out tool Moen sent me, I was applying enough force to cause the plastic to deform. I went to the local Ace Hardware and purchased one of these cartridge pullers. I took it home and tried it out immediately. Applying less twisting force than I used on the free Moen twist out tool caused one of the two metal tabs to break off. I took it right back to Ace Hardware with the receipt and got my money back. The manager said it had not happened before. However, I did want to take a chance on breaking another one. Instead, I opted to purchase a BrassCraft cartridge puller at HomeDepot. I got the cartridge to budge a little bit, but this cartridge puller also started to deform. The hard water won. I am going to call a plumber on Monday. In addition, I going to have the plumber put in some inline valves so I can turn off the water to the shower head without turning off the house main valve. Next time, I will replace the cartridge after 5 years instead of 15 years.

Customer Review: Worth every penny
Summary: 5 Stars

My in-laws had a few older Moen faucets which reached time to be lubricated or replaced since they were difficult to operate and one leaked. Using regular tools, I was unable to get the bathroom sink faucet cartridge to move at all due to the age of the faucet and very hard water (deposits). That faucet got replaced before I got the tool.

The leaky shower faucet cartridge was extracted using this tool according to the instructions. However, after "loosening" the cartridge, it was still impossible to pull it by hand. Continuing to turn the extractor nut pulled the cartridge out and revealed that the rubber seals on the cartridge body had stuck to the inside of the casting and had been shredded by pulling the cartridge out past them. Without this tool, the wall would have to been broke open to solder on a new valve body - luckily, this tool saved me from having to give that news to my father-in-law!!

Customer Review: Works except if the cartridge retaining ring is loose
Summary: 3 Stars

If cartridge is in perfect shape, this tool will work fine. My problem was a shower cartridge mounted horizontally. However, before I got the tool, I tried rotating the cartridge with a punch which somewhat deformed the tabs, thus the tool could not rotate the cartridge to loosen it. I had also used a rod through the handle part and pulled the retaining ring out so that the internal parts came out OK but the cartridge outer shell stubbornly remained stuck. So, when I used the puller part of the tool, it just popped out the retaining ring and again removed the core of the faucet. So, was a waste of money for my purposes. My bet is that it will work fine for sink faucets mounted at an angle, but horizontally mounted shower cartridges will defeat the tool.

Customer Review: Saved time and easy work
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading several reviews, I decided to pick up one of these along with the new cartridge. And I agree, it made the job much easier to pull the cartridge out. My faucets are about 12 years old, so they've been in there a while. Without the tool, I would have worried about pulling to hard and possible damaging something else. The only problem I experienced was that it didn't pull the cartridge out completely OR far enough to easily pull it out the rest of the way. I had to use some heavy duty pliers to create some space between the "Puller" and the "Cooper Ring" that holds the cartridge. Easy enough and I'd recommend buying if you are changing a faucet.

Customer Review: Moen Cartidge Puller
Summary: 4 Stars

I had read from others what a difficult time they had removing a Moen faucet cartridge from a shower valve. I did not want to experience breaking off the cartridge inside the valve as has happened to many others. Many folks recommended buying this puller to remove the cartridge. When I opened up the valve, I could see their point. The cartridge was unlikely to come out easily. The instructions for the puller are a bit vague (and possibly incorrect) on how to use it. But I figured it out and the cartridge came out easily. Now I'm ready for when the other shower valve stops working.
