Tools and Hardware Reviews of Morning Industry PAKK-01SN Keypad Knob Entry, Satin NickelCustomer Review: Installation is fairly simple, product works well Summary: 4 Stars
This unit runs on 4 x AA batteries, not included, which can only be accessed from the "unlocked" (secure) side. The battery cover has a small phillips screw, and the unit actually comes with a #00 phillips screwdriver. Also under the battery cover are the "set" and "clear" buttons for programming codes, as well as the autolock switch.
Installation occurs in three steps:
1. Remove the old lock hardware.
2. Install the mechanical pieces and the keypad.
3. Install the "brain" and battery pack.
The keypad is very slim, but must be installed at the same time as the outer knob, since it sits between the knob and the door. There is a tiny cable and connector that must be threaded through the knob opening, and connected to the "brain".
The only annoyance is that the cable must be threaded just right in order for the "brain" to sit flush on the back of the door.
One feature that's very nice is the ability to egress without having to unlock the "unsecured" side: I have one of these units installed on a bedroom door, and in the event of a fire, all you have to do is turn the knob to get out -- no fiddling with the lock in an emergency.
With the auto lock setting, the unit will automatically re-lock in 10 seconds. With this feature disabled, the unit must be manually locked, with the lever on the unsecured side, or with the "lock" button on the secured side. It would be nice to be able to temporarily disable the auto locker without having to pop the battery cover.
I bought two of these, which are both working flawlessly.
Customer Review: Hard to turn due to the latch design problem Summary: 2 Stars
This otherwise great lock has a huge design flaw with its simplest part - the latch, which makes the knob hard to turn. If you compare the latch design to a latch by any other manufacturer, you'll notice that the flaps that move the latch when the knob is rotated are moved very far from the center of the cam compared to other latches. The resulting angles of the contact between the cam and the flaps cause the moving part of the latch to stick and make it very difficult to start rotating the knob at the very beginning of the latch movement.
After experiencing the problem and finding out occasional complains by other people in web reviews, I contacted the company and received the replacement latch. It is a bit better, but is still much harder than a Weiser latch I had before. After comparing the latches, I found this problem mentioned above. It must be obvious to any mechanically inclined person that such a design will cause problems, as it does. I wonder why the company did not fix this easy-to-fix design problem with such a simple part, whose design must have been time-proven by the centuries of use...
I though of using the Weiser latch (which moves easily) with this lock, but unfortunately the square hole that engages the latch with the knob in this lock is bigger, making the swap impossible...
Customer Review: Hard to turn Summary: 1 Stars
I am an old man and have lost the strength in my hands. I find this lock is almost impossible for me to open from either side. My wife cannot open. I have contacted the company and they say it can be fixed - waiting for instructions. If I can not get it to work easier I will have to return it. Hopefullly the company will come through or perhaps be able to install handles instead of a knob. Otherwise the hardest part of the installation was connecting the wires. I would like to have a combination that would have to be used before programming. Anyone can remove the little screw and then program their own numbers - and you would never know. They also could push one button to delete all the codes. Not as secure as it could be because of this. It is one little screw secure.
UPDATE
I talked to the company and they said to use some oil. Did give me a choice to return the knobs and when they received them they would send handles. I had to pay freight both ways and they had to receive the knobs before they would send the handles - in the meantime a door without hardware. They say they have had the complaint before. I will return to Amazon and not buy another one like this. They seemed to not really care about helping a customer to any degree.
Customer Review: Impressive, Good, Solid Product Summary: 5 Stars
I browsed through all the different keypad door knob and decided to go with this one for our garage side door. First off, the build quality of this lock is solid and the price for this was reasonable compare to other brands on the market. Came with all the necessary parts to set it up. It was not too hard to install, took about 15-20 minutes to install and to set up.
Been using it for about 3 months and had no problems at all! I enjoy the 6 different user access; 4 different codes for the family and 1 for gardener/housekeeper/friends. The codes are easy to setup or change when needed. I have the function on "autolock" after 15 seconds and its great. Never forget to lock up. Simply close the door and you do not have to worry about it because it will be locked. No problems so far with the lock being "stuck" as one reviewer mentioned. Maybe they updated the system? Also, the keypads light up at night/in the dark for easy viewing and entering pass-code.
I highly recommend this well designed, solid product!
Customer Review: Good buy Summary: 4 Stars
We purchased this doorknob/lock to replace our shotty garage door entrance lock. We immediately loved the new appearance in contrast to our old. The latch mechanism also closes very smoothly and with little force required, a huge difference compared to our old.
The door lock has a neat feature to auto-lock 10 seconds after opening removing any doubt if we had locked the door. I believe you have the option of up to an 8 character key code. We don't even use a key for this door anymore, relying solely on the keypad. There is no signs of wear or the numbers fading yet after ~ 2 months of usage every day.
The only complaint is the knob is sometimes difficult to turn, we haven't determined the cause yet but sometimes its buttery smooth to turn but every once in a while it takes a FIRM grip and twist(or quick jiggle) to get the knob to turn. Might be detrimental if you ever in the need to enter/exit quickly.
