Tools and Hardware Reviews of Neiko Professional Digital Laser Photo Non-Contact Tachometer - Accurate to 99,999 RPM MeasurementCustomer Review: Useful and inexpensive Summary: 4 Stars
I've used tachometers over my adult life for a variety of tasks, both contact and non-contact. This one was purchased for measuring the RPM of some machine tools including a drill press.
For this type of measurement the tool worked well for me. I found that in the case where the shaft was being measured some times the reflective tape provided insufficient contrast and I had to apply a piece of non-reflective tape to act as a background. This is a normal expected characteristic of these devices.
One thing I was a bit disappointed about was that the device was not supplied with alkaline batteries. The old style zinc-carbon batteries are good enough to get you up and running but for a device of this nature that may be in storage for a long time between uses I think that they are a poor choice because they don't remain potent for long periods in storage and often corrode ruining the device they are stored in. So replace the supplied batteries ASAP with alkalines, or at least remove the batteries when storing your tachometer so that you won't have it ruined by corrosion.
Customer Review: Not bad for the buck Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this to determine how far off my motorcycle's tach was. It has remarkable pickup of nearly any bright, reflective surface such a chrome or semi-bright aluminum cast so be careful to provide decent background surface isolation. Don't work about running out of reflective tape. I was able to get great results using Testor's silver model paint painted directly on to my engine's flywheel. You can accomplish the same results by painting a spot on a piece of masking tape and sticking the tape to whatever you are reading from.
The down-side of the device is that it is pretty much contoured for hand-held use. I had to rig some velcro to it so that I could strap it to a tripod (leaving me with less to juggle why adjusting carberators). The strapping does make it a little difficult to manipulate the buttons while still being able to see the readout. Don't get me wrong, using this as a hand-held works quite well but does require a steady hand if you are shooting through a narrow space. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with it for the little $$$ it cost.
Customer Review: Great Product, Great Price Summary: 4 Stars
I never thought such a product would become affordably available for the home mechanic so I was delighted to find it. I have not been disappointed either in its accuracy and ease of use. I've appreciated the suggestions in the other reviews, too, as I've found the reflective tape to be less sticky than I'd expected. Also, I think it could have been designed with a better battery cover. I'm reluctant to leave the battery in for extended periods as it will corrode, but removing the tiny screw is a bit of a hassle. I've decided to tape the cover closed. This tool sure is a welcome improvement over the old Brigg's vibratach I was using! Cheaper too!
Customer Review: +Cheap, Easy -Lacks refinement, features Summary: 4 Stars
This is truly a product that fits its price range. Its cheap, and does not come with any frills or features. But, it works, and is very easy to set up. For the price, its a great buy.
EXCEPT one thing. For our testing I found it annoying there was no setting to take a measurement, just a button that had to continuously be pressed for it to read RPMs. We ended up taping the button down, which worked well enough. Of course, I should have known this before I bought it.
Good product for what you pay
Customer Review: Professional Grade Digital Laser Photo Non-Contact Tachometer Summary: 4 Stars
Nice insturment for the money. I have used it about eight times to measure the speed of small gasoline engine drive systems with pulleys. It appears to be accurate enough to compare with factory measurements, although I have not verified it with more costly, more accurate tachometers. For the verification process I need to do, it seems to work just fine.
It is easy to set up and easy to read. I would buy it again.
