Tools and Hardware Reviews of Nelson 50230 Metal Vane Square Pattern Spray Whirling SprinklerCustomer Review: Returning for a second purchase Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this sprinkler last June and have used it so often I am surprised I have not worn it out. It produces a large spray pattern of about 34 square feet, although the soil at the farthest reaches does not get as thorough a soaking. The base is heavy enough that it doesn't tip over, even when using a new (not very flexible) hose. It puts out a fine mist, simulating a light rain, and the water pressure is not violent like some of the oscillating sprinklers, so it can be used near even the most tender perennial gardens, even those starting from seed. The spray stays relatively low to the ground (about shoulder height, and I am 5'4"), so there's less chance of it evaporating in the air, but best of all, it puts moisture directly where I need it -- on the grass or close to the roots and crowns in my perennial and shrub gardens.
We're having an unusually dry summer in the northeast this year (almost no rain since June), so my sprinkler has been getting even more of a workout this season. It goes to work at least three days a week for about 4-6 hours each time. So as far as quality and durability, the Nelson is very well made. I left it outside full time from June through early November last year, and it has been back outside since April this year; it has only now just begun to show a tiny bit of rust, which I quickly removed with sandpaper.
I'd been moving the sprinkler back and forth between the hose in the front yard to the hose in my backyard until I realized I should just order another. For the price, it is worth having more than one, and it has saved me hours of hand watering, because I can put it in place, turn it on, let it go for 20-45 minutes, and then move to another location. I can do all corners of my third acre lot (more than half of which is gardens) in less than six hours. My water bill suffers this time of year, but my back gets a break, and I don't have to be eaten alive by mosquitoes. I can honestly say this is the best sprinkler I have ever used. And one extra bonus is that I get to watch the birds taking a bath.
