Tools and Hardware Reviews of NewAir G73 Electric Garage Heater With Built-In ThermostatCustomer Review: Good build quality and quiet! Summary: 5 Stars
I have an attached single car garage that I primarily use as a workshop. The garage has been insulated and dry-walled. Initially I tried heating the garage with a propane heater that I had purchased previously for use while building my addition. It generated alot heat but was noisy and had to be vented.
In doing my research, I quickly determined that an electric heater was going to be the most simple and least expensive solution for my needs. I am very comfortable with adding circuits (safely / to code) so the 240volt was outlet not too daunting.
I liked the G73 because of the features (thermostat, low fan noise)and straight forward install. I found the reviews here on Amazon to very helpful, there is even some excellent pictures of an installed unit.
Once the unit arrived, it took me a couple of hours to install the circuit (fishing a cable into the basement back to the sub panel), in the end I chose to NOT hardwire it, but rather install a 240volt outlet in the garage, and installing a cord on the G73. This allowed for easy removal in the summer if I wanted to store it for some reason.
Once the unit was turned on, I was very pleased that it was able to quietly raise the temperature in the garage by nearly 15 degrees within the first hour. When I do leave it on overnight I just keep it around low, it keeps the garage around 60 degrees.
The unit has been installed for roughly 4 weeks, I am very pleased with this purchase.
Customer Review: Excellent heater and easy to install... thanks! Summary: 5 Stars
I live in northern Indiana and it's been fairly cold this winter. Some days, temps aren't even reaching 15-17 degrees... that said, I have an insulated garage with a 9 foot ceiling. I took some time and sealed up around the garage door and the side door and put plastic over the window to keep drafts from coming in. I hooked up the heater Dec 26 and within 3 hours, it was roughly 70 degrees... even though it was only 17 degrees outside. At first when you see it, you think well... I don't think it'll work but let me tell you, it does a great job. That being said, my electric meter spins and I haven't gotten a bill yet, but I figured it would cost roughly $10 a day should I always leave it running, which I won't. I went to Menards and bought some carpets to put in the garage and I use the garage like a "man cave". I have a tv, pop machine etc.. and I turn down the thermostat at night. When I get up in the morning, it's usually right around 60 degrees and about 20 minutes before I want to go out and spend time, I turn it up. Kids come out and play too. Again, I do have a well insulated garag and took the extra time to block drafts. I couldn't ask for a better heater. 30amp double pole breaker and I hardwired it, but I'll put a plug on it in the spring. The installation instructions are worthless... but it's easy to do. If you're not comfortable putting in the wiring, just hire an electrcian. It shouldn't take them more than 20-30 minutes to have installed!
Customer Review: Dayton G73 heater Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this heater for my 700 sq. ft. shop with 12' ceiling (well insulated). In the first hour it raised the temperature from 43 to 55 degrees (F). After two hours temp. was up to about 60F. I was impressed.
It is small, quiet, and produces great heat for its size.
Thermostatically controlled fan will cycle on and off until the ambient temperature is above 55 or so, then will run continuously until reaching desired temp.
Good heat with poor documentation. Documentation does not give a clue as to how to connect to today's 240v 4 wire connections.
The heater requires a 240v 30amp 3 wire connection. I have a 30 amp 4 wire outlet. Therefore, I purchased a 4 wire 240v dryer pigtail from Home Depot. Then I connected black to black, red to white, and green to green (ground). Black and red are the two incoming hot wires in newer 240 volt 4-wire arrangements...I presume. I am NOT an electrican.
The 4th wire (white) in this case is not needed. I capped the white wire and tied it off inside the heater.
Expect some smoke in the first couple of minutes...from oils on the heating elements, etc. It is a nice heater considering price and size.
I subtracted one star in my rating due to the poor documentation.
Customer Review: Does the trick Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased a couple of the 4000 watt heaters by Dimplex before purchasing this 5000 watt heater. My garage is 32' by 36' and it has both 10' and 14' ceilings. 2x6 construction with R-19 insulation and sheetrock on the inside. From what others have told me, "the ultimate man-cave". It is actually a working garage with my office for my business above. When I built it, I never had the intention of using it full-time as an office, but more as a storage for our boat during the winter months. Well, that changed, so I needed to install a heater to keep the garage semi warm. I wired up a 30 amp outlet, which wasn't difficult since my breaker panel was right below where I hung the heater. It's not a huge heater, but it puts out good heat. Last week, it got to -17 at night, the heater was running most of the night, but the temp in the garage never got below 50 I would say. In my mind, that is pretty decent. I have been very pleased with it, like others suggested, wish it had a dryer wire or such to plug it in, but I wired up an existing range cord I had and it seems to work fine. I wouldn't suggest the 4000 watt ones, they just didn't seem to do the trick for me, just blew out semi warmish air. This one, the 5000 watt one, blows out nice hot air.
Customer Review: I was skeptical, but now very impressed Summary: 5 Stars
I built my woodshop which is well insulated (R19 in walls, R40 in ceiling) and about 460 square feet with 8 foot ceilings. Living in Iowa, I was skeptical whether this heater could do the job where it sometimes gets 10 to 20 below for several days in Dec and Jan. Those fears were alleviated.
Edit as of 01-03-09. The local news just advised that here in my area, it is the 9th coldest December since 1897 when they started keeping track. They also said it is the second snowiest December on record. There were several days below 0 and a couple to -20 ambient temp which is common in those months any Winter.
If you are at all concerned that the heater can handle a level of cold that commonly reaches 33 below (wind chill) and -20 ambient temp, worry no more. I kept the heater on the third mark out of 10 and it maintained between 49 and 53 depending on the coldness of the night. When I went out to work, I turned it up to a tad beyond LOW and it leveled at 60 degrees. It's also very quiet in that I'm able to have a normal voice conversation with anyone present and we aren't really aware when it turns on. Very nice not have the smell of fuel oil in the air. I'm very happy with the purchase.
