Tools and Hardware Reviews of NORPRO 559 Immersion Heater for Warming LiquidsCustomer Review: This thing heats fast. Summary: 4 Stars
This water(liquid) heater works fast. In less than a minute you have a boiling cup of water. This is intended for use on cups and glass. It has a hook next to the metal head to clip on the cup.
The manufacturer strictly insists on consumer to follow the direction for proper use. It is good that they permanently attached the instruction to the cord; do not detach. It seems that the life of the device depend largely on how you use it correctly.
1) Make sure that the metal head is submerged into the water before plugging and unplugging.
2) Do not submerge the plastic part or the cord itself.
3) Do not use on oils, and any other thick liquids
300 watts
120 volts
UL listed
Cord is 18AWG, around 2 1/2 feet long
2-prong plug, no ground
Made in Taiwan
Caution:
1) The metal part is still extremely hot when you take it out of the cup. Make sure to keep it away from your skin, plastics, or any heat sensitive materials.
2) While in use, it is very easy to tip over. A little tug on the cord will spill your hot liquid on the surface.
Customer Review: Warm the water dont boil the water. Summary: 3 Stars
It went out on me after about a dozen uses with me following all the rules. The only thing I may have done with this was to let it go to a boil(not enough to lose water and have it fall below the coil). It went out in less than 10 minutes, probably closer to five. I think you might be able to get it to last longer if you just heat the water warm and not get it boiling hot. I will probably buy this again because really there is no alternative. I would pay a lot more (10 times as much) for one that has a reset switch that doesn't break it permanently. This is something that you really want to work when you need it and plugging it in and it not doing anything is terrible.
Does anyone know of an alternative that has a reset switch? I'll check back later to see if anyone has answered me because I really want something that I can use for this purpose and this one will go out on you eventually. I know it and the people that 5 starred it know it. The price is a consulation but with shipping charges doubling it, it is an "OK" deal. Sorry for the negativity but I have to get through the night without caffine.
Customer Review: Liquid warmer, pretty good but could be better Summary: 4 Stars
It would be nice if the company that makes this item would make it with the coils already slightly separated from each other. That would make it MUCH easier to clean and, possibly, will let it heat beverages up more quickly. IF it had this modification to start, then I would have given it a five star rating. I got this item so I could quickly heat up a cup of water to make instant coffee or tea. The product does quickly heat the water, but there is a problem with it. The coils of the heater are tightly wound together and, with repeated use, the coffee or tea will leave a dark stain and even residue in the groove between the coils that is VERY difficult to clean out because of its location. To remedy this problem, I had my boyfriend insert the tip of a screw driver between the heater's coils and spread them out a bit. This then allows a nylon scrubbing pad to be inserted between the coils so that they can be cleaned off and, fortunately, it did not damage the heating element inside of the coils.
Customer Review: Treated it well, but it was a lost cause Summary: 1 Stars
"Born" July 17, 2010 - Died Nov. 20, 2010. First of all, the plastic "hook" that hangs it on the side of a coffee cup broke off spontaneously the second time I used it, and after that I could heat only half a cup of coffee at a time, so as not to sink the gizmo too deeply into liquid. It was good, then, for about 50 heating processes, and then it burned out and had to be discarded. I didn't mistreat it once, and I NEVER had it plugged in when it wasn't immersed in liquid - it simply self-destructed of its own accord. In my book, that puts it under the category of "Supplies," not "Equipment," and any electrical appliance that has that short a life has no business being on the market. I am back to using the Sunbeam "Room Service" appliance that I bought in the 70's and packed up for many trips. It may take up more space on my coffee cabinet, but at least it works dependably. I'll never buy another Immersion Heater again, and it's doubtful that I'll buy another Norpro appliance, either.
Customer Review: Burned & smelled up my 1st latte in less than 5 minutes Summary: 1 Stars
Beware if you intend to use it with creamers, milk or any potentially sticky or sugary liquids!
I unwrapped it and inserted it onto the top edge of my extra large latte, I was right in front of the ceramic mug of coffee for less than 5 minutes when I noticed it started to smell very burnt (like burned toast). I took out the heater and unplugged it while it smoked/smelled up the entire house. Yes, it got extremely hot! I had milk, coffee, and sugar creamer - maybe it was the sugar or milk that caused this? I immediately ran it under water because it looked like a crust (of milk? creamer?) was continuing to burn on it. I sipped my drink which tasted like it smelled so I threw it out. The heater is now ruined (very black, sticky & hardened crust) so I'm throwing it away. No sense in wasting time asking for a refund for $7 when I read other reviews advising customer service is worthless for this product.
