Tools and Hardware Reviews of O2-Cool Model 1054 10" Indoor/Outdoor FanCustomer Review: Great fan, good battery life, needs to spend 5 more minutes on the design floor Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this fan to keep my girlfriend and I cool during a camping trip this spring. We needed something portable yet powerful with enough battery life to buy us a few hours in the morning once the sun came up (as everyone knows, tents turn into ovens as soon as the first rays of sunlight appear).
This fan worked GREAT. The battery life works as advertised and it moves quite a bit of air without making too much of a ruckus. The stiff hinge allows you to point the fan wherever you want and holds it in position nice and solid like, and it folds up flat enough to stuff it into a backpack if needed. It does take a TON of batteries but again, they last a really long time. This fan kept us very cool and comfortable (Enough to sleep in a little too much, actually!)
The only problem (as my title suggests) is that the battery "lid" or cover is designed really poorly. It's a huge pain to lock and unlock the lid and you have to push pretty hard to get it into place. The lid itself is thin and cheaply made. If the fan tumbles around too much I'm pretty sure you'll end up with D batteries all over the place.
Also, the on switch is very easy to activate accidentally; all you have to do is brush up against it. When we were driving home we couldn't figure out where the "wrrrrrrrr" noise was coming from in the car until we got home (5 hours later) and found that a blanket had turned the fan on. The good news? The batteries still lasted forever :)
Synopsis: despite the design flaws, this fan is AWESOME. If you're trying to keep cool while camping, buy this fan. That is all.
Customer Review: Perfect for the Price Summary: 5 Stars
The Fan is [...] and that includes an adapter. You can buy it for $9.99 without the adapter - in other words the fan cost $10 bucks! Now Come On! For $10.00 I have a fan that I've used for 4 years for outages (just used it tonight matter of fact) and vacation (I like white noise while sleeping). I have kept batteries in my fan all this time and I have yet to replace the batteries so I can assure you that the batteries are NOT being used when you use the adapter. After 3 years, the plastic blade started rattling but I found that if I turn the fan onto it's side the rattling stopped. I didn't care as I'd buy a new one each year IF I had to (which I didn't)! I can't imagine people complaining that the fan is flimsy...it's PLASTIC people! I don't treat it overly gentle but I do keep it in the box it came in and we don't throw it around .... probably because it's ...PLASTIC! The fan I purchased did not come with the legs as this model does but I doubt I'd use them. I'll try them out but even if they crack/break you can still use the fan (as I've done) without them. As far as the reviewer who claims that his model "exploded" and wrote that the fan is a fire hazard - I wonder if he/she actually owned the O2 Cool model? I suspect it was another brand and even if it wasn't I would encourage you to see how many folks who wrote reviews, wrote that they found it to be a fire hazard/ or who's fan exploded. Aside from a few folks writing that they found their $10 fan to be flimsy (which it's not) most folks praise this fan.
Customer Review: Great while it lasted Summary: 4 Stars
I've had this fan for about two years now. At home I plugged it in and used it on a table where I wanted some air circulation without blasting me off my chair. However, where it came in real handy was the storage unit I rented a year ago. I moved my stuff in during July when it was real hot. The storage unit is upstairs where there's no air flow at all. The units are all metal - so it gets real hot. I wasn't sure this fan was going to make a differance, but boy did it ever. There's no way I would have been able to spend the time needed without this fan circulating the air around me - I probably would have passed out. I kept the fan in the unit so it was there whenever I visited to take stuff out or move more stuff in. It's been a true lifesaver. However, the last time I tried to use it I could tell the batteries were running down. I left it on anyway, and all of a sudden I heard a crash. The batteries blew the back off the fan and sent it flying through the air. Although the fan looked like it was ok, after I purchased new batteries it no longer works. So, I'm in the market for a new fan. I'm wondering if anyone else has had their fan blow like that when the batteries were almost dead.
Other than the fact that it's life ended prematurely, this fan puts out some nice air flow for a battery operated fan. Also, I'm sure I got more than the 72 hours worth of battery life because I never changed the batteries since I owned it and It's been on for many hours at a time.
Customer Review: Ultimate portable fan Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this fan a year ago when my elderly dog couldn't handle temperature in the house greater than 75 degrees. Either we ran the A/C all day just for him or we put a fan near his bed. I didn't want to run up my electric bill when it wasn't really that hot so I decided to try a fan. He liked it but whenever he went to a different room in the house I had to unplug and plug the fan each time. That got annoying real quick so I went out to buy a battery powered fan, something grab n' go. Turns out there aren't any except this one, not that I was able to locate. Batteries can be expensive but nothing compared to running the A/C. I put it near his bed and turned it on low. This fan ran for hours every day without a problem. I loved that it was convenient for me and made him comfortable. It got us through the summer and then I packed it away. It's back out again working as well as ever even though our dog is no longer around to enjoy it (he passed away last month at 18 yrs old).
Oh, another thing I really like about this fan is that it folds up very narrow, easily slips into tight spaces for storage and is easy to tilt. Love that is has a handle. I wasn't expecting to like this fan more than the Vornado but it's now the one I go to first when the temps heat up.
Customer Review: I would only buy this as a battery fan Summary: 5 Stars
Ordered 3 -- one was defective (wouldn't turn off if the batteries were in).
Only would buy this as a battery fan. For the price, if you don't need battery function, you'll be disappointed, and this is a waste of money -- there's better fans, cheaper at Walmart, etc.
If you want a battery fan, and you want as large as you can get, this is the best fan I've found. We use it to run in a car if we leave the dog behind in mildly warm temperatures, but don't want to take any chances. The batteries last a while on the low setting; it runs on 8 D's.
Airflow is good, not good if it was compared to an AC fan, but excellent compared to other battery fans in its class.
Finally, just to be clear, the 5 stars is based on what it's sweet spot is -- batteries. I am not including it's performance on AC -- didn't try it, not interested, and I can see how the electronics which are basic could get overloaded with AC power which other reviewers have said.
