Tools and Hardware Reviews of O2Cool 1038 Smart Power Rechargeable Swivel FanCustomer Review: You may not need batteries Summary: 4 Stars
I shopped around quite a bit before ordering this battery-powered fan. The $55+ price was more than I wanted to pay, but none of the cheaper ones had consistently good ratings, plus I had a $20 credit from Amazon for ordering something else; otherwise, I probably would not have ordered this.
Pros:
1. It is lightweight without the D-cell batteries, but you may not need them.
2. The rechargeable battery will power it for 3+ (high) to 8+ (low) hours, though these times will likely go down as the battery gets older. These times are long enough for me that I may never need the D-cells, at least not until the internal battery dies.
3. The fan is very quiet.
4. The fan cage tilts up and down to adjust air flow direction.
5. It has a large handle for carrying which tucks away when not needed.
6. Four alternative power sources - house, car, internal rechargeable battery, D-cells.
Cons:
1. No protection from overcharging the battery is provided, so you have to be careful when charging it. To be safe, I'll plug it into a timer that cuts off after 24 hours.
2. The battery cannot be replaced. OTOH, if I have to charge it twice a week, the "up to 500 charges" will last a maximum of 250 weeks. I'll use it a maximum of about 15 weeks a year. At that rate, the battery will supposedly last over 15 years!!. If I get HALF that much use out of it, I will be satisfied.
The air flow on high, plugged into the wall, was not as powerful as I was expecting from this large of a fan. It wasn't exactly wimpy either, but I'm hoping to have it keep me cool while sitting outside in what will be 90+ degree temperatures. I'll have to wait and see. Of course, the more powerful the airflow, the shorter the battery life would be, so it's a trade-off.
I'm deducting 1 star for the price and the poor battery-related designs, but I would give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Here's a very good price on D-cells at Amazon: Duracell Batteries, D Size, two 8-Count Packages.
**Update: We've had a much hotter than normal summer and I've used the fan extensively for over 2 months while waiting in the car for an hour or more at a time. I've sat in up to 95 degrees (in the shade) and the fan has kept me relatively comfortable. I said before that the air flow was not impressive, but with the fan a foot or so from my face, it is sufficient. When the temperature is "only" 85 or so, I can even put the fan on low speed.
My golfing friends have purchased the non-rechargeable version of this fan (looks the same) and wired it into their carts' batteries and they love it.
My only mistake was buying the batteries. Three hours (on high) from the rechargeable battery is more than I need, so I've never even opened the package of batteries.
