I have been using dryer balls for a few weeks now and am somewhat impressed. They are easy to throw in the dryer with a wet load of laundry... but so is a dryer sheet. It is mentioned on the package that dryer balls do not contain any chemicals whereas dryer sheets do. But dryer balls are odorless, so my clothes emerge smelling of burning fabric instead of the flowery scent that I enjoy so much with dryer sheets. But what I do like about dryer balls is that they eliminate static, and they circulate the air throughout the laundry, so my clothes dry fluffier in a shorter amount of time. However, dryer balls are not suitable for small spaces because they make a loud thumping sound. But I have learned to ignore the cacophony of the pounding dryer balls with the roaring tumbling of the machine, and came up with using both dryer balls and a dryer sheet in the same load, so my clothes get the best treatment from each product.
