Tools and Hardware Reviews of Orange Guard 103 Water Based Indoor/Outdoor Home Pest Control - 32 oz SprayCustomer Review: Product Ineffective - Does Not Perform As Advertised Summary: 1 Stars
Reading both the positive and negative reviews on Amazon and elsewhere and hearing mixed comments from my neighbors, I decided to test the effectiveness of the product.
According to the product website, the product was created after the inventor noticed that ants and other insects were repelled by orange peels. He set about trying to mimic this effect by producing a concentrated spray-on product that contained one of the organic oils contained in orange peel - in this case, d-limonene.
Test: Kills On Contact
I had set up a quarantine environment just to test the product, which the ants couldn't escape from - essentially a large, glass-enclosed and sealed ant farm. Then I sprayed ants in the farm with the product, resealed the environment, and watched what happened.
Not only didn't the product "kill on contact," but the ants sprayed with the product continued to walk around for the next week. I didn't test beyond that: I discarded the quarantine environment, after concluding the product did not kill ants.
Test: Repels Ants
For this test I used surfaces in my home which were heavily traveled by ants: the kitchen counters and the bathroom walls and floors. Before each test, all surfaces were cleaned using soap and water, then thoroughly rinsed and dried.
As a control, I used 16 quarter peels of navel orange, which had been separated from the flesh, which I spread on surfaces before using the product. Ants avoided areas where the peels had been placed, staying on average 6 feet away from a piece of peel.
After removing the peels from a given area and rewashing, rinsing and drying the surfaces, I then sprayed the product on the surfaces and watched what happened. Ants were not repelled by the product, which was sprayed heavily on surfaces in my kitchen and bath. Given, the ants avoided the area when wet with the product, but when the surfaces were dry, continued to roam on them as if no product had been sprayed on. I treated surfaces both by leaving the product on and letting it dry, and as the directions said, by wiping excess off after three minutes. Neither treatment mode was more effective than the other - ants are not repelled by this product.
Conclusion: I found this product to be totally ineffective against the several different species of ants in my home. Either the active ingredient is contained at too low a concentration to be effective, or the active ingredient in the product is not the organic oil that is the effective agent that kills and repels ants and other insects in orange peel (there are several organic oils in orange peel). If you want to use an orange peel repellent, go out and get a bag of oranges and use your own peels. Note that the peels will only be effective in repelling ants for about a week, or until they dry up.
Orange Guard does make a nice air freshener, but don't spray too much on: it fumes heavily and if too strong it can irritate your nose and eyes. Also, it can mildly irritate your skin (itching), so don't spray it on surfaces where you will be walking barefoot or otherwise touching it with bare skin.
