Tools and Hardware Reviews of Orbit 62001 Lawn and Garden Digital Watering TimerCustomer Review: Simply works as advertised Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased three of these after searching for a reliable and effective timer as well as reading the reviews. These timers
work as advertised they are solid build and very easy to program.I purchased these to take care of all my watering needs and they fit the bill perfectly. I originally purchased one timer from home depot different brand and found that the unit did not function straight out of the package.I researched a little and found many people having the same issue with that particular timer. Great product that does as advertised. Nelson Simple Soaker Flower Watering Sprinkler with 50-Foot Tubing, Five Nozzles with Plastic Spikes, Risers, End Plug Set, and Deflectors #50180.I also purchased two of these units as well for my garden watering needs.I also found these a great way to water all my plants ran two together for 100 feet of watering. The great thing about the Nelson set up is that the water pressure with some systems will get to low toward the end of the run rendering such a length ineffective I have not had this problem with this set up.If you are looking to use it for lawn watering may need to select another product. The distance and spray of the heads is pretty fine even with just one run.I also believe as another reviewer wrote the spray distance advertised may be a stretch .
Customer Review: Great features - not so great reliability! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought five of these timers from Amazon. I loved the flexibility on watering times and the convenience of the manual timing. However, one only lasted a week before the valve would not work. The second one lasted three weeks before the electronic screen went blank and would not respond to new batteries (Most timers only take one 9 volt battery but these take two). Amazon credited my account and made it easy to return them both. I replaced both of these with Melnor 3015s which have worked okay so far. The third Orbitz lasted six weeks before its electronic screen went blank and would not respond to new batteries. This time I contacted Orbitz (six year warranty) since my 30 days to return it to Amazon had expired. Orbitz said they would ship me a new electronic controller (they come in two parts which allows you to program the timer while holding it in your hand and then slip it onto the on/off valve) in five to six days. Orbitz said that the electronic timer is normally reliable and that the on/off valve is more prone to fail. Unless you have an odd watering cycle where you are restricted to only watering certain days of the week I would recommend buying the less expensive Melnor 3015 because in my experience it has been more reliable.
Customer Review: Reliable and solid Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned this product for about two months now.
PROS:
* Built like a brick - very solid
* Reliable - does what it's supposed to do
* Easy to program - the digital interface is nice
* Brass faucet connector - much better than plastic
* Removable timer - You can program the unit remotely without unplugging the hose
* Solid mechanics - uses a solenoid to turn water on and off - simple and low power consumption.
* Several modes - you can pick which days of the week to water on, or you can pick an "every 2" or "every 3" day mode
* Manual mode - lets you easily set the device to manually water for a certain number of minutes
CONS:
* Uses two 9V batteries. Kind of expensive. Hope it doesn't eat through these
* Plastic hose connector - kind of cheap. Wish it was brass. Plan to add a brass nipple.
* No rain detector - it will water even on rainy days
Overall, this is a very solid product and I expect it to last for a long time. Because it's digital and uses very simple moving parts (a solenoid), it should last a very long time. The batteries should last for a long time for the same reasons. For the money, I think this is a best buy.
Customer Review: It works great, but... Summary: 4 Stars
I have used the product for few months in my new drip irrigation system, but have enough experience to write this review.
The product is great, it is very reliable, easy to program, and it works. The removable controller feature is really great for ease of programming. However, the manual said that there is an optional remote control (although not wireless) that I can purchase separately so I can control the unit from inside the house. That would have been great. But when I called the manufacturer, they said that it is no longer (or never have been) available. They said that I received a unit with an old outdated manual. That would have been a major convenience for me, and considered returning the product because of it. However, it is working so well, and I did not know about that option until after I read the manual. So, I decided to keep it and gave it a four star. If they made the optional remote unit availabe, I would have given this a five star.
The unit did not appear to be as water proof as I'd like to see it. But, no problem. I just "bagged" the unit using zip lock plastic bag and installed it so that the open side of the zip lock bag is at the bottom. That should make it really waterproof.
Customer Review: A great digital timer and I tried a bunch before I got here... Summary: 5 Stars
Living in KS we get weather from all around and often spend several weeks a Summer > 100 degrees and bone dry. My parents live out of state and we take off for a week every year around Independence Day. My wife has put so much effort (and money) into our yard, I can't see taking off for a week with no care. This year in May, I started reviewing timers, bought several of the cheaper brands and was nothing but disappointed with the quality and number of leaky connections.
After throwing away a little better than a $100 on failed attempts, I purchase 6 of these Orbit Digital 62001 timers and couldn't be happier. The price I found here on Amazon was the best I could find for this model and I have nothing but good things to say about how they functioned while we were gone.
We have put them up for the year, but I will be bringing them back out next year and am very confident they will perform well into the future... Plus, I came home and the wife was truly excited about the growth and condition of her plants when we returned. What more can you ask for!!!
Money well spent,
-V in KS
