Tools and Hardware Reviews of Orbit 62001 Lawn and Garden Digital Watering TimerCustomer Review: Working great so far Summary: 4 Stars
Working great as the automatic valve for my "poor man's" automatic soaker hose system.
I connected it to the main outdoor faucet (aka hose bibb) via a six foot hose, then used a series of "Y" valves to allow this to feed three soaker hoses.
I only use one schedule, which turns on the water Mon, Wed, Fri for 40 minutes in the morning. It could run 4 different schedules, which seems like more than would be necessary in our climate.
No leaks around the connections. Turns water flow on / off as advertised.
One note .... you'll need two 9-volt batteries for this device. They are not included.
What would make it even better? The removable programming module is great. It would be even better if the timer / schedule would run without the module attached. In other words, instead of keeping all the circuitry in the module, put some in the body of the valve and only require the module to be connected to flash programming changes into the the body.
Customer Review: Leaks too much to keep the water on Summary: 3 Stars
After reading a number of glowing reviews about this timer, I bought it hoping to be able to use it for early morning lawn watering before my husband and I are out of bed. Unfortunately, I can't stop it from leaking where the timer connects to the outlet. I tried plumbers tape and using a wrench to tighten it as much as possible but I can't get the water to stop dripping. Because of this, we can't leave the water on and simply set the timer and walk away. Instead, I used it in the evening to water the lawn for a specific amount of time and then go out and turn the water off after the timer shuts off to stop the drip. Otherwise, our water bill will go through the roof!
The timer works very well and can be set a lot of different ways. I like the fact that you can take the timer panel off and set it in the house and then reconnect it. Plus we've had some rain storms and intense heat and the timer has held up well.
If this didn't leak, I would give it 5 stars for sure.
Customer Review: Good idea but with a flaw Summary: 3 Stars
This timer worked very well for me almost all summer and fall, which for the price is what I would have expected. My situation is that I needed a timer I could remove as needed to utilize the hydrant for other things, then replace, set and forget for a while. After several months of removing and replacing, the cheap (I simply cannot understand why a higher end item such as this has a "plastic" hydrant connection on the bottom) connector began getting cross threaded, and soon totally gave out. So I now have a perfectly good timer that can no longer be used because a cheap plastic connector gave up the ghost and I cannot get any hose to hold a connection. Sigh! Now I'm asking myself if it was worth the higher price? Maybe since I did get several months instead of the normal several weeks from the cheaper models, but probably not.
I suppose if you need rarely remove it this flawed part would last much longer... at least long enough to go through one battery life.
Customer Review: No Leaks, no Worries, no Grief Summary: 5 Stars
I've used orbit sprinkler timers for years now without any regrets; however, this hose timer is a first for me. I sat in my living room and programmed the clock just by using the quick reference on the lid of the timer. I took the clock out to my green house where I hoped it would rum my misters and a soaker hose. It runs beautifully and on time there are no leaks and no worries. I had to place the timer in a tight corner but the whole mechanism swivels so I can easily read the display. I love the manual feature so I can turn on the misters any time and go in and get cooled down, LOL. Yes you might pay a bit more for this clock but it is well worth it. I'm the type of person who checks every product before I buy, there were so many disappointments with other brands so I decided to stay with Orbit their products have never given me any grief.
Customer Review: High Quality Garden Timer Summary: 5 Stars
Over the years I've gone through several garden hose timers to water my garden and yard. Usually, I just go down to the local hardware store and pick one up. However, usually after only 1 season, the timer starts to leak and floods the battery compartment, which kills the battery. The timers that I previously bought were made by Melnor Inc. and both broke within the same season I bought them.
This time I bought the Orbit timer and spent a little more money (extra $10), but already, I'm glad I did. Not only is it easy to program especially because of the removable programming unit, but it is simply built better than the Melnor timers.
Time will only tell if this one will leak too, but I'm optimistic because it seems to be built better and with higher quality parts.
