Tools and Hardware Reviews of Orbit 62035 Extra Valve for Yard Watering System

Customer Review: Handy Set and Forget Watering System
Summary: 5 Stars

This valve along with the rest of the kit (sold separately with a 4-port manifold, a timer controller, and two more valves) is the best outfit that I've tried (and I've tried several brands) for setting up timed watering stations in my yard while I'm off on vacation. This is the next best thing to an in-ground sprinkler system at a fraction of the cost!

I was gone for the whole month of July, and I didn't want a dead lawn when I returned, so I invested about $100 in this system with a couple of extra valves, hoses, and sprinkler heads. I set the sprinklers up in the yard with each of the four ports controlling one set of sprinklers (I have enough pressure that one hose can cover up to three sprinkler heads), plus a soaker hose in the flower bed. I set the timer to start at 4:00 A.M. every third day with the soaker hose set for 30 minutes and the sprinklers set at 50 minutes each, and it worked! Each valve triggers in turn when the previous one finishes, so by 7:00 A.M. everything was watered. When we returned from vacation, everything was in good shape. I'd had a kid come by to mow once every week, so the yard looked great!

One thing to watch out for is to turn off your automatic watering system once you get back and coil up your hoses! I forgot and had a full cycle water the side of my porch...

Customer Review: Great convenience, watering your plants
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great product. I have a matching timer with four ports, which I bought as a kit, with two of these valves. I use it with a hose reel and a soaker hose for a bunch of potted plants in the back yard. It's such a great convenience to just set the timer and all your plants are watered consistently, no matter how busy you are. And no more problems with coming home to dying plants, after returning from vacation.

One problem with the valves, as another reviewer pointed out, is that much of the hose connection point is made of plastic. If you put stress on the joint by moving it or hanging it off your faucet, it will break over time. That happened to one of mine, as I connect it to a hose reel through a quick connect. After about 8 months, connecting and disconnecting the hose line, the plastic connection points became brittle, cracked, and started dripping.

To solve this, I would recommend that you use a short flexible extension between the valve and your faucet, so that both ends of the valve are flexible, relieving stress on the plastic parts.

Beyond that, I think the product is great.

Customer Review: Works fine
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had these valves and the timing system for about 4 years. The first winter, I left one outside during our freezing Pittsburgh weather, and in the spring, I found that it had irreparably been damaged by expansion of the water inside. My bad!

The others continued to work fine. I got a couple of replacements, and they, too, continue to work fine. I agree with other reviewers that they are made of flimsy material, but hey, they're not very expensive! Because of the flimsy plastic construction, I always take care not to twist or torque them at the faucet, and none of them has broken.

Interestingly, when I have brought them out in the spring, the valve solenoids often don't work at first, but after cycling them a time or two, they work fine.

I consider this a disposable product. When I am in town, I trust them implicitly. Whenever I go away, I alert a neighbor to watch occasionally for a fountain spewing by my outside faucets. So far, there has been no problem.

Customer Review: Excellent over ground water system
Summary: 4 Stars

There have been many reviews prior to this wherein people have mentioned how the system works and such. The pros of this system are well worth buying it so I'll add only the cons that have affected me. One of the major downsides of this system is that the electronically controlled valves don't last for more than 1 yr i.e subject to NC summers and winters. I have two of these systems, 2 valves for the front yard and 4 valves for the back yard. I've had to replace all 6 hence less 1 star for the review. The other downside of this unit's packaging is if you go to Home Depot they sell it as a kit i.e 2 valves, manifold and controller for $50. It's rather stupid to go back and buy another kit for just 2 valves when the valves cost $15 or so each. Hopefully someone from homedepot reads this post and orders the valves.

Customer Review: Overall Good product for the money
Summary: 4 Stars

I have 2 full orbit systems on my home. One for the front yard, one for the back. This is my 3rd summer with them. The electronics seem to work fine, but programming them is a pain. The valves are the weak link. After sitting in the sun (attached to the brass 4 way) they dont close as good as they should, which creates howling water pipes. At first i thought my new house was haunted, but it was those darn valves. The silver lining? These bad boys have a 5 year warranty. Who gives warranties like that anymore? No one! This alone makes it a wise purchase. As the valves start to die, i call orbit and tell them of my problem. They ship me new ones. I actualy just bought 2 more new ones to have as spares. Know that they are gonna give out on you, but also know that Orbit IS there to back thier product.
