Tools and Hardware Reviews of Ortho 0320110 Home Defense Max Kill & Contain Mouse Trap - 2 PackCustomer Review: Do You Expect Me to Eat This Bait? No, Mr. Mouse. I Expect You to Die! Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If Blofeld or Goldfinger made a mousetrap, this could be what they'd come up with. A Bond-level villain's death-trap!
This trap is:
Easy to bait
Easy to set
Easy to place
Easy to check if the mouse is caught
Easy to dispose
It's even easy to open the blister pack package!
This is a clever design. There's a bait door in the back of the trap that pops open. It has a little container to hold the peanut butter (the recommended bait). Slip in a little PB, close the door. Now there's no access to the bait except via the entrance. Then press the red lever. That sets the trapping device. It's VERY sensitive. You might have to press the lever down a few times as the catch BARELY holds the trapping device in place. Set the trap in a mousey place and that's that. When the mouse is caught you'll know by the position of the lever (very obvious).
The only problem is ... will it actually attract a mouse? I had a clever little mouse invader who successfully ate the bait (peanut butter coated raisin) from a regular trap 2 nights in a row. The 3rd night I put the Ortho near that trap. A couple of days later the bait was snatched from the regular trap again while the Ortho was undisturbed. I reset the regular trap and swapped it's place with the Ortho. The next day the mouse's luck had run out. But it was killed by the regular trap.
So I don't know that enough peanut butter smell escapes the Ortho to actually attract mice. It looks like it SHOULD work. But I can't guarantee it and I don't have enough of a mouse problem (1 or 2 a year) to test it quickly.
I estimate that the Ortho is an effective and clean mouse killer and would be useful in situations where you have a low level of mouse activity. If you had a lot of mice it could be expensive to keep buying the Orthos. Note that if the mouse leaves or is killed some other way it's easy to pop open the bait door, clean the old bait out and wait until you need the Ortho again.
Finally, cats dogs and children won't be hurt by this.
--------
Also, I've noticed some other reviews saying the spring isn't strong enough and the mice aren't killed instantly. This is a ONE USE trap. If you reuse it the spring gets weaker and won't kill reliably.
