Customer Review: Works well, but could use some refinement

This product works as described and works well. It is simple to operate and allows the user to make power usage decisions based upon the displayed results. For example, by utilizing the sleep funtion on my desktop computer, I found that I will save approximately $175 a year in energy savings versus leaving my computer on constantly. I also discovered that I use approximately $50 worth of electricty annually by allowing my HP laser printer to stay on constantly; needless to say, I am going to start turning it off when not in use!
The meter is easy to use and simple to set up, however it could use two improvements based upon my experience. (1)The LCD display is somewhat dark and is almost impossible to read in low light situations. A backlit LCD display would be a huge improvement. (2)The other drawback is the way the plug on the meter is oriented. When you plug in the meter, the size of the unit itself, combined with where the plug is located on the back, blocks the other socket on a standard wall socket. This is simply an inconvenience, but you MUST unplug both outlets on a standard wall socket in order to plug the meter in to measure only one socket. A simple workaround for this is to use a short extension cord between the wall socket and the meter. The Amazon version includes the "liberator" cord which would allow for this. My purchase was made elsewhere and didn't include this cord. Regardless, this seems to be an engineering oversight on the part of the manufacturer. Maybe that is why they started including the cord!
All-in-all, this is a very valuable product that can help you see where you are bleeding energy costs.
