Tools and Hardware Reviews of Sensor Swab Premoistened Swabs Type 2 with E2Customer Review: Probably requires more skill than I have Summary: 3 StarsOther reviews of the non-pre-moistened versions of the Sensor Swab have been very positive, so my ineffective results probably mean I'm not too good at this sort of thing.
Originally, there were two spots on the sensor of my Nikon D40x. Before using any Sensor Swabs, I used a Rocket Blaster ([...]) to make sure there was nothing loose. The spots didn't disappear. After using one Sensor Swab, there were several new spots, some of which seemed to be lint.
Eventually, I used all four of the swabs. Each time, there were different spots, and I could also see streaks on the sensor, which weren't there originally. Those streaks also were apparent in the test photos.
At this point, figuring I had nothing to lose (except the cost of a new camera, but hey, who's counting?), I switched to cotton swabs, moist breath, and the Rocket Blaster. After quite a few iterations, the sensor was streak-free, almost spot-free, and (thankfully) unscratched.
Finally, I just kept using the Rocket Blaster, because it moved the spots around without further physical contact. After a few air-only iterations, the spots all seemed to be gone.
So, I'd heartily recommend the Rocket Blaster (which was part of the same order as the Sensor Swabs); and it's possible that the Sensor Swabs actually removed the original debris that started this project; but overall, they made the problem worse, not better, and I was lucky to avoid having to send the camera in for cleaning/repair or having to buy a new one.
